Here's A Knee-Jerk Blog About Duke Nukem Forever

Yeah, we know - Duke Nukem Forever is gonna see the light of day.  Some people are psyched (which is the category where I continue to reside) and some aren't.  In general, the fact that the game will even be on a retail shelf should win the guys at Gearbox some kind of award for "company that finally got the shit done"...or something.  Even then, there's no guarantee that the game won't see some kind of delays, especially if we realize that Gearbox took a pretty penny of time with a game called Borderlands, going so far as to completely revamp the visual style of the game.

 You heard the man!
 You heard the man!
Let's disgress, however, and make sure the haters understand something very clearly very quickly: there is not a single human being, be it man or child or dog-cat-supermind-hybrid, that thinks Duke Nukem Forever is going to be the next evolution of video game gameplay.  Unlike the filth that Yahtzee spews about it being an RTS, RPG, and all that other shit, it's the exact opposite.  It's simple what the people excited about Duke Nukem Forever want to see:  a pure first-person shooter, something that isn't about taking cover or leveling up or all the other pretentious shit that we've come to have in the genre.  We want a new game that makes us remember how fast a game could move, how an iconic character can transcend so much bullshit to see the light of day, how it feels to kick ass and chew gum!  We want a game that is so unapologetic in its approach to blowing shit up and killing the shit out of filthy alien scum that it makes us giddy with joy like a girl watching Twilight!

There's the question of whether the game will be worth the wait, and of course, the answer is no.  Nothing - not the Star Wars prequels, not Live Free or Die Hard, not so many thing - can match up to the hype and wait time of a decade.  Well, take that back.  There's still Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, but that's another story.  The chances that Duke Nukem Forever is going to be some "ZOMG MIND EXPLOSION" is a fucking facade.  Instead of trying to believe that, it's easier to believe that the game will simply be an ode, an homage to a time that once was.  I'm okay with that, and there are plenty of others that are as well.  The people who aren't looking forward to the game and think it should just die off are completely entitled to that opinion.  It doesn't matter if those people have been burned over the years by 3D Realms' promises or if they just don't like Duke Nukem.  That's cool, folks.  This game isn't about you, so stop making it about you.  The negativity of your opinions means little other than the fact that you are yet again hating just to hate.  It's cool to hate on DNF, and we get it.  We don't genuinely care, though, because we're finally getting the game that we've wanted for so long.

If anything, we should point out that Broussard was self-financing this project for the longest time, and it's safe to say that it's not an easy task to do so.  The fact that this game WILL survive and that it WILL see the light of day deserves a pat on the back for the folks that still want it to be released, the people who actually did work on the game and don't want to give it up.  They could've easily let it die and fall into obscurity, but as we've been taught in life, you have to see it through until the end.  The end doesn't come until Duke Nukem Forever hits store shelves.

So celebrate and rejoice, frown and cry, spit venom and hate.  It makes absolutely no difference.  It's Duke Nukem Forever, and I for one will ALWAYS bet on Duke.

But what if Gearbox decides to change engines and it comes out in 2015?

I completely agree with you though, having not been of an age to full appreciate the classics, I'm pretty excited for this game. Also, as I like to say,

I love Randy Pitchford.

Can't work it out, the game's gonna be average at best, and I've never been more exited. Oh well.

Still, well done Broussard, you've made Valve look efficient.

Being playable is enough for me. Duke Nukem Forever can never be seen as what it is, but as what it represents, and it will be a thing that every gamer has to experience, rather than play just for the sake of playing. If that made any sense...

Two of the things in this universe that I cannot for the life of me understand are nostalgia and the so called "so bad it's good" approach to art and media. The only circumstance under which I would buy DNF is if it reviews well, which it probably won't. I'm firmly in the camp that believes that Gearbox has better things to do with their time than finish the longest running joke in entertainment history. Borderlands was an extremely entertaining game. Hell, I'd be more interested in another Brothers in Arms game.

I don't think Gearbox's delay with Borderlands is any indication that there is a chance of there being a delay with Duke Nukem Forever, the delay of Borderlands came about due to a rather unique set of circumstances. I also don't think Yahtzee's "review" of the game should be labelled as filth, it was obviously a one-off joke review about a theoretically perfect but conceptually ridiculous game. My main point though is that while I'm not going to begin mindlessly ranting about DNF not possibly being able to meet expectations I'm also not going to start giving praise to a game which we haven't even seen yet. Gearbox are a good company, I strongly agree that Broussard and Gearbox deserve a good deal of praise for just keeping the project up and running and I understand that what everyone wants from the game is a pure shooter experience but the quality of the game Gearbox are going to deliver is yet to be seen.

I agree with this opinion.  As someone with a business oriented mind, I know at least a few obvious things:  Cutting your losses, and giving the audience what it wants.  This isn't always true, and I agree that profit shouldn't always come before artistic integrity or whatever, but DNF is not artistic integrity.  It will not represent some grand throwback to a golden nostalgic age, and will never do well enough in the market to justify it's continued existence.  The audience that will actually appreciate this game when it is released will be as small as the odd Deadly Premonition cults, and only they will  be satiated.  To those that fall in that group:  Good for you, I hope the game is everything you hope it to be.  I mostly fall into the "couldn't care less" group, but a part of my brain knows that resources could be going to much better ideas.

Stop.  I bring up Doom 3 and rest my case, as a lot of people pulled the same complaints out with that.  "No one wants a shooter like the days of yore, it's outdated for a reason."  What some consider outdated, I still consider good.  I look at Doom II, which was recently released on XBLA, and that game still holds up after all these years FOR WHAT THE GAME IS.  It is about running fast, killing the shit out of demons, and generally just having fun with it.  I don't need a story, tons of NPCs to interact with, and super complex shit.  I need a gun that can shoot and a character that can move.

Bravo, sir.  While I have never played a Duke Nukem game (mostly because of my age), I am still incredibly excited for Duke Nukem Forever.  I cannot think of any piece of media, of any medium, that has a development history quite like Duke Nukem Forever, and quite frankly, that fascinates the hell out of me.  Plus, I just like that style of humor, and all of the levels shown thus far seem top notch.

@Gamer_152: I absolutely agree that people shouldn't comment on how the game plays when there is no game there.  My blog definitely wasn't about that, but rather about what I and a lot of the people looking forward to the game for this long have wanted out of it and hope will come from it.  I would hope that anything said wasn't misinterpreted, and I think you make an incredibly valid point with your comment.

I didn't honestly give a shit about Duke Nukem Forever, even back when I first heard about it back in... I don't know what year honestly. With that said, I'm with Jakob on this one. I doubt we'll see the greatest FPS to ever grace the planet Earth, but I hope to see something similar to the classic Duke Nukem games without all the modern bells and whistles. As long as the gun shoots when you want it to, fine with me.

However, I would accept dialogue trees only if they're all typical Duke one-liners and don't make any fucking difference in how the game plays or ends.

I played the demo at PAX, and well, god damn, it exists, what I played was playable, and hey, it was entertaining in that lowbrow Duke Nukem way.  If Gearbox thinks they can turn this thirteen-year-old nightmare into a decent game, more power to them, because what little I've seen, touched, and heard is actually not an ungodly disaster..

I find it so crazy that this game actually exists in some playable, somewhat complete form. I'm fighting with myself. They way I see this game, is I have the lowest expectations possible, and I also have the highest expectations possible all at the same time. I don't know what to think. Most of it comes from the fact that Duke Nukem Forever has so much baggage it's been carrying for the better part of the decade, and it, for the longest time, felt like a testament to the fact that George Broussard couldn't get his lazy, fatass to complete this game on time and indulge the fans. I feel like Duke is finally moving again, moving forward. Gearbox just did what 3Drealms should have done a long fucking time ago: show up with a playable demo at a conference and go, "yep, here you go."

Great fucking contribution.  Exit is that way >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

@Napalm: Well, you also have to remember that 3D Realms comes from an era where PC gaming was all about the biggest, best, latest graphics capabilities.  Over the time that they were developing DNF, that technology kept growing and growing exponentially faster.  It was tough to keep up, and they had to keep starting from scratch or updating code or whatever.  It wasn't an easy process for anyone involved there, but the fact that they continued working on it for SOOOO long means that they seriously wanted the game to come out at some time...I would think.  However, nowadays, pretty much everyone uses UE3 and rarely goes with proprietary tech.  In turn, it means that Duke Nukem Forever is FINALLY at the current level of specs with no problem!!!

That's my justification of it all at least, and I'm sticking to it.

I love Yahtzee.
I must say, it really feels good that Duke is going to have his day. And as you say, I hope this game is all throwback, and no apologies.
