Knee-Jerk Reaction: Call of Duty Black Ops

Rather than include this into my regularly scheduled Uninteresting $#!% blog, I wanted to launch a new thing.  Essentially, it'll be exactly what the title says:  these will be knee-jerk reactions to new games where I've gotten very little time with it.  The first entry:  the hotly anticipated Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Playtime so far:  four hours of multiplayer, including Wager Match (One In The Chamber) and Combat Training

Good Impressions

  • Split-screen Xbox Live play ala Halo (about time!)
  • Combat Record is incredibly in-depth and available right at my fingertips
  • Everything feels right when it comes to weight (you can't lob a grenade all the way across the map)
  • Combat Training, while a little aimbot-y, can really help improve your game in significant ways
  • Work for your Pro perks, and the work teaches you how to be better WITH those perks (BRAVO, TREYARCH!)
  • Gunships are fucking awesome!
  • SAM turrets = <3
  • Good balancing to many perks, including some of the crazy perk combos you can use.  Lightweight, Marathon, and Sleight of Hand with dual mags on a FAMAS?  NUTS!!!

Bad Impressions

  • Obvious balance issues (some guns just don't feel as powerful as they should, like the Stakeout)
  • Map sizes are typically pretty big, promotes long range camping above movement
  • Couldn't bullet pen through a chain link fence on one map, and my friend couldn't through a wooden fence on another...but I can bullet pen through the side of the truck in the middle of Nuketown?
  • RC-XD cars are fucking annoying!
  • Occasional frame rate hitch
  • Host migration still isn't great, typical "hey, the host is lagging and has the advantage" bullshit
  • So far, I can't justify shotguns being a primary when four shots at a medium range from a Stakeout doesn't equal a kill in some occasions.

Overall Knee-Jerk:  Black Ops is the secks so far.

How's it going for the rest of you?  Is Black Ops pissing you off in all the right ways and stroking your cock in all the best ways?  Do you hate it so far and swear to not play anything past Modern Warfare 2?  Obviously, there will be those that need to just generally talk shit about Call of Duty.  It's a good thing that those people don't matter in here.  = D

In a month Black Ops will replace MW2 in terms of hatred towards it.  And the cycle will continue when the next game games out because the one that's the most popular at the time is the one everyones gonna aim their hate at to be different.

Interesting opinion and format.  This makes me want to do a knee-jerk reaction so to speak shortly.  If you dont mind me borrowing your idea that is...

Haven't bought it yet, but likely will, because it has Zork.

I like it. It will provide a good distraction for when I need a break from Bad Company 2.

Shotguns and snipers were pretty horribly gimped (a sniper has literally not killed me yet). LMG are about as useful as before, but have smaller clips now. AR's and SMG's are king.
But nothing is overly powerful, which is nice. Perk sets are varied among players, and none stick out as crazy ridiculous.

I love those cars, haven't used one myself yet but running away from one and occasionally killing one is great. And when they kill me I just laugh. They only take 1 bullet or so though, and can be heard from a mile away, so they aren't too bad as long as your careful.
And I have noticed bullet pen issues, for example I unlocked a Bullet Pen challenge after shooting at somebody through a thin metal handrail, but couldn't get a kill behind a wooden wall in another map.

I've seen some dudes do some crazy things with the stakeout, but yea, Snipers aren't around much.

Incredibly varied.  The most popular definitely seems to be the RC car.  It can be annoying, but there have also been plenty of times where I was yelling "OMG OMG OMG OMG CAR IS CHASING ME GET AWAY LOL GET AWAY".  You can make it fun if you want.  Cobra (7 killstreak) is a stationary thing placed on the map like a Predator was, so it's not flying around everywhere.  Gunships fucking wreck, and you can actually control the movement of them this time.  My favorite is the SR-71 Blackbird.  It's basically an advanced UAV that tells the direction enemies are facing, what level of a building they are on, etc.  All kinds of nifty shit.  SAM turrets are nice too, as they help balance out against a team of massive air killstreakers.

As for snipers, I would say a lot of the "lack of snipers" has to do with the massive hit Treyarch dealt to quick-sniping.

@jakob187: Thanks for the in-depth reply. My biggest annoyance with MW2 was the killstreaks and their ability to utterly ruin the experience of the game. Sounds like Treyarch may have touched on that a little.

Can guest players even get on? Or does it have to be someone else with an xbox live gold account? Because if it allows guests, then that just sold me on this game.

It allows guests.  Two player split-screen, which made me happy as shit.

No, the guest player does not affect your K/D spread.  However, I forgot to point out that the actual in-game menu when you hit the Back button...shows a K/D ratio FINALLY!

I wanna throw this out there:  I haven't played the single player or Zombies AT ALL yet, but I will be getting around to it.  However, just based on the multiplayer alone and the massive amount of improvements that Treyarch has made to this game, I'm really surprised by Jeff's four-star review at the moment.

I think it's great. To me, this is what Modern Warfare 2 should have been. Don't get me wrong, I liked Modern Warfare 2. But I was massively disappointed by the four hour single-player, incoherent plot, and the broken multi-player. Black Ops resolved most of the problems with a decent story (while hokey, is still far more coherent than Modern Warfare 2), an eight hour single-playe, and an extremely polished multi-player. I also liked how they added the theater mode from Halo 3. I'm surprised on just how good the single-player was, as it was just as good as anything Infinity Ward made.

So far, this is my favorite first-person shooter of the year.

@fishmicmuffin: I will say that I have no idea if there is a frame rate hit when playing split-screen or not, but I can tell you that playing in split-screen over XBL does lock you out of a couple of things available in the multiplayer.  They are all logical things.  For instance, you cannot use the Camera Spike, which is a camera you can stick up for surveillance.  Having two people on one screen with that available to them would be game-breaking in massive ways.  Stuff falls in line naturally with that.  I think that's one of the only, like, two things.

@Godites: I enjoyed Modern Warfare 2 until about three weeks after release, maybe a little longer.  That's when the usual happened:  everyone learned all the glitches and exploits and used them over and over to make the game unenjoyable.  I'm not going to say that Black Ops won't have the same thing happen.  The reason for this blog is very much about getting that reaction out there before the population turns to the usual shenanigans.

However, I think Treyarch has made a more balanced game than what IW did with MW2.  They've addressed a lot of issues in smart ways.  Akimbo?  It's gone.  Instead, buy Dual Wield as a weapon attachment.  Wanna use Warlord (Bling in previous games)?  Cool.  You can't mix that with underbarrel attachments like shotguns, flamethrowers, and noob tubes.  It's the types of things that IW flat-out overlooked and were too cocky to change.

I will say, however, that I thoroughly enjoyed the single player in Modern Warfare 2.  I didn't care if it made sense or not.  I wanted gunfire, explosions, and craziness.  I got that.  I just thought Veteran difficulty was WAAAAAAY too easy.

@jakob187: Yeah all of that stuff makes sense as something you have to sacrifice. But, man, I am very happy that I don't have to sit around on the couch swapping the controller around with multiple people one at a time. Getting a chance to play will come much faster with 2 people playing at once. That and my friends who aren't great at the game don't have to play on my account any more, which is nice! The statistics that are saved to my account will actually be mine and only mine, making them much more interesting to look at.

The glitches and balance issues nearly ruined the game for me. Modern Warfare 2's multi-player is still fun, but it needed a lot of work. I was worried the same thing would happen to Black Ops, but so far, I haven't experienced a single game breaking bug or balance problem. I enjoyed Modern Warfare 2's single-player a lot, but I was disappointed by the storytelling. You could say that storytelling doesn't matter in the series, but since Call of Duty 4 told a cohesive and engaging story, I couldn't help but be underwhelmed by Modern Warfare 2's plot. Not only was it nonsensical, but I didn't care for my teammates the way I did with Call of Duty 4. While scripted death sequences were shocking in Call of Duty 4, it was just overused in Modern Warfare 2. It's like Infinity Ward became cocky, and thought they could give players hard hitting "shock and awe" moments by repeating them, but they became predictable and tiresome.

Call of Duty Black Ops not only has a kick-ass single-player, but a decent storytelling and character development to back it up. While it was a little over-the-top, it still made A LOT more sense than anything that was going on in Modern Warfare 2.

Cons:
LAN fails to work on PS3, seems like a bug.
You can only do bots while connected to the internet, seems like a dumb idea, it should be allowed to be used in splitscreen
No splitscreen coop

Pros:
Single player is really good so far, nothing new, but it is still good.
Alot of new multiplayer features

@SSully: I honestly think that the bot matches are a bit of a throwaway, despite the fact that they can improve your skills in the game in its own way.  However, yeah, it's kind of dumb that you need to be hooked to the internet.  At the same time, in this day and age, the ones playing without internet versus those who do have internet is a lopsided thing as is.

You need to address this shit as a matter of urgency.

Shotguns are a weird weapon to balance. Getting a shotgun that feels like it has adequate weight and impact but that doesn't completely destroy everything instantly is therefore hard, especially in multiplayer. I hated all the shotguns in modern warfare 2, they felt like water pistols, and the range is so inconsistent it's unbelievable.

@Sweep: Well, I'm currently working on a letter for Black Ops' multiplayer, just to let it know that we're going to have to go our separate ways for a while and see other people.  After spending a little time with Dead Ops Arcade and Zork last night, the multiplayer is getting the hint.

Also, after checking out the SPAS12 last night, I can say that I finally agree with my buddy:  shotguns shouldn't be a primary with as low-end as they feel.  They either need a damage-by-range buff or they need to go to secondary.  It just seems like the right thing to do.  Three or four shots from a shotgun to kill someone is a little too much.  The Olympia seems pretty good, but that's about it.

Now the sad news:  as I started getting incredibly warm last night, then very tired and a clammy forehead, body aching everywhere, it would seem that I've contracted some form of illness.  This means that my chances to play any more of the game this week are pretty damn slim.  =  (

The spawn system is terrible (in FFA). I've spawned many times into gunfire and in the sights of campers. I don't like killstreaks, I shouldn't be able to get 16 kills from a gunship in ground war. There's nothing memorable about the multiplayer..the one with the best connection wins.

PS3 version was nigh unplayable tonight and I'm kinda done with it. Gonna force myself to check in periodically if they've fixed it. 'Til then, I'm going to bring some of my WoW characters up to speed for Cataclysm and hopefully play some BF:BC 2 Map Pack 7.

Then again, I really hope they've fixed this shit already and I can play more Black Ops tomorrow. I want to get my money's worth!

@shivermetimbers: I can agree that the spawn system could use some work, even in TDM.  However, it's not like this is anything new to the franchise.  I don't agree with you on the gunship issue.  As the highest killstreak you can get, it would be absurd if you couldn't wreck shop with it.  Moreover, it can be shot down.  If you aren't out there trying to shoot it down...hell, if your whole team isn't trying to shoot it down...then you DESERVE to be getting killed!

@shivermetimbers: Free For All has never been the way to play Call of Duty. The maps just aren't conducive to that playstyle.
