@dasakamov:Oh, that's for sure part of the appeal, and definitely deliberate, and I'm not saying that it should be any different, but it's worth being aware that it's a pretty sanitised notion of how large civilizations emerge, and who was around before they came to dominance.

Like, I get it: Civilization is obviously a game of hugely abstracted systems, and it's trying to find balance in all these asymmetrical factions, and it's not about telling that story, and so on. That's all fine, but it does play into some national myths that avoid the darker sides of their origins.

In short, I'm being very tedious and you're free to ignore me if you like.

It's good that they're addressing environmental issues into the game, but the fact it seemingly doesn't figure into diplomacy at all is pretty disappointing. Perhaps the excuse is that it would be difficult to make work from a design perspective, and putting climate change to the fore is a good thing in general, but ignoring the fact that it can really only be addressed by global co-operation seems like a pretty gross misrepresentation.

I don't mean to say that the game is bad for this, or that I'm surprised (4X and city builder games routinely have pretty suspect political assumptions; most notably, the blank slate starting point). I just thought it worth mentioning. I'm sure I'd have fun playing it.

Suddenly realizing they're playing some version of the Swedish drinking / toasting song "Helan Går" at 31:58. Weird.

Haha, yeah, I noticed that too. It took a moment because of how weirdly sedate it was. Still, cool.

Despite Dan's naysaying, Resident Evil 0 is just as good as the remake of 1. It's more of the same. People just have nostalgia for 1 and rate it higher.

This is purely anecdotal, but the RE1 remake on GameCube was my first experience of Resident Evil, and I loved it, whereas I never got very far in RE0, so I'm not sure it's all down to nostalgia. It could be that I played them in quick succession, so I'd had my fill. Or it could be that I got stuck and I couldn't face starting again to try to get to the same place with better inventory. Either way, while it didn't seem bad by any means, I wasn't nearly as driven to finish it as I was with RE1.

@brad promised to include the drone video he mentioned in the show notes, but it looks like he forgot. Here's something similar I found after a little searching:

I love how Dan lost a point every time he won a point, because he decided to kill someone even when he was just under "search".

The devs laughing in the background made this video even better.

Yeah, it was great. His default behaviour, particularly under stress, is to throw all his points away. It's perfect.

Brad and Ben commented on the somewhat unusual price; presumably it's because this is a British-developed game, so the base price is £9.99. That corresponds pretty closely to $12.99.
