I've been hearing about this game/visual novel a lot recently, but I haven't played it yet. I know it's free, but I'm not going to waste my time with a VN unless I know its any good or not. I hear this game actually treates the subject matter of disabilities maturely and it has a lot of heart. But I also hear that the game is amateurishly written, filled with cliches and cornyness you'd find in a bargain bin harem anime. I don't mind that there's little to no gameplay, because Planescape Torment had poor gameplay but the impeccable writing made up for it. But does Katawa Shoujo feature excellent writing and a strong cast of believable characters? Or is it poorly written fetish sim in disguise?

edit: I do admit though, that the way menus worked in me1 was terrible, and that the vehicle sections could have been much better. I don't think the solution was "remove those parts altogether", though.

For what it's worth, they added vehicle sections to ME2 later in the "Project Firewalker" DLC:

Pretty good feel to the controls, but... yeah, not the highlight of the game.

I thought the Firewalker was worse than the Mako, but at least it was optional and you weren't forced to use like ME1's mako. I hope they remove vehicle exploration all-together in ME3.

Well, what do you feel?

Want my honest to God opinion? Not really, but the quality of writing seems to have declined ever since Mac Walters replaced Drew Karpyshyn as lead writer.

A lot of people are complaining that the series is slowly straying away from its RPG roots and taking a more Gears of War route with the gameplay. There are even YouTube videos that are bashing the demo and comparing the game to Jersey Shore.

Do you think the series is being dumbed down or are the changes for the better?

It really comes down to whether or not you like JRPGs. I don't like JRPGs, and I didn't like Xenogears.

So, y'know, fans of the genre rejoice, or something. Planescape: Torment it is not, but some people really like it nonetheless.

I like some JRPGs such as Chrono Trigger, the old school Final Fantasy games, and the Shin Megami Tensei games . But most JRPG I've played after the advent popularity of FFVII were too silly and cheesy for my taste. JRPGs such as Legend of Legaia, Star Ocean, Tales of Symphonia, and every FF game after VI just didn't click with me. I'm still not sure if Xenogears is worth the purchase, considering I immediately become irratated by melodrama and angst like you usually see in JRPGs.

I've been hearing about this game ever since it was released, but I never got to play it. I'm thinking about downloading it on PSN right now, but I'm not sure if it's worth a purchase (I'm not high on cash right now) and people have divisive opinions over it. Many consider it to be masterpiece in video game storytelling, by exploring a lot of mature and philosophical themes such as neoplatism. I even saw one guy call it the Planescape Torment of JRPGs, a bold claim considering I'm a huge Planescape Torment fan. Then there are many others that call it a pretentious and idiotically written, that's panders towards typical anime tropes and the plot is a convoluted mess. There are also those that say the first disc is great, but say the game's gameplay and story go downhill by the time you get to the second disc.

Is it worth the purchase or should I give this game a pass?

I would have to say Master of Orion 3. Deus Ex: Invisible War was a unworthy sequel to its revolutionary predecessor, but on its own it's a decent game. But Master of Orion 3 is not only a sequel that doesn't live up to its predecessors, but it's an atrocious game in general. It's quite arguably the worst video game sequel of all time, for not only being a disappointment, but a poor game.
