Jango's Top Games 2012

List items

  • This game has faced a lot of criticism, but for me it was a worthwhile end to the series (well, once they'd released the Extended Cut anyway). I'm man enough to admit that my eyes did not remain entirely dry throughout.

  • An ironic title, given that this had to be one of the best sleeper hits of the year. Sure, the game was far from perfect, but the characters and world were so fully realised that I found it easy to forgive the minor shortcomings. Plus, it had some of the best street racing gameplay I've experienced, even when compared to actual racing games.

  • Again, a game that was far from perfect, but was just so much damn good fun to play.

  • Honestly, I find the standard Forza games tremendously tedious, not being a big sim fan. Horizon took me by surprise, though. It stripped away the tedium and replaced it with a gorgeous open world to explore. I don't think I've had that much fun with a racer since the original NFS Most Wanted.

  • Having never played a Max Payne game before, I went into this with no preconceptions or expectations. Great story and nicely fleshed-out characters elevated what might otherwise have been some tedious one-note gameplay, and kept me hooked right to the end.

  • OK, so not technically a 2012 game, but man I was hoping, praying and waiting so long for this collection and it was worth it. 3 of my most beloved games from the PS2 days, they are just as much fun to play now as ever.

  • See above.

  • Not the kind of thing I normally go for (military shooters) and I ignored this game for quite some time. Then I heard about the harrowing story and the way it flipped this gung-ho, one-dimensional genre on it's head, so I gave it a go. I did not regret it.

  • Another game I initially ignored, simply because I was put off by the idea of the 1st person gameplay. Glad I decided to put my qualms aside and try it out. A nice, solid little game (although I do think it is not quite as amazing as many people say).

  • What can I say? It's LEGO, and it's Lord of the Rings. There was never a chance that I wasn't going to love it.
