Jasonofindy: Best of 2009

  • Polished in every way. The addition of multiplayer was just an unnecessary bonus but done extremely well.

  • Played and loved the 360 version. A great original IP. Mechanically and stylistically, the game is great, but the story and world details could have used a bit more fleshing out. The multiplayer was excellent, AND the game played pretty well solo as well. I'll be interested to see how Gearbox can build on this framework to create an even better sequel without somehow messing up the core gameplay that already works so well. I also hope other companies pick up these game play concepts and create more games of this type.

  • I love 2D metroid and castlevania games. Shadow complex combines many of their gameplay ideas with slick modern graphics in a modern setting. Unfortunately for people like me, this game type has been stuck on handhelds for far too long. I love the genre and dislike tiny handheld gaming so much that I bought a game boy player attachment for the gamecube last generation just to play the metroid and castlevania games on a TV with a controller. I'm hoping this game's success is a signal of future titles of this type to come on LIVE, PSN, or WiiWare.

  • Another surprisingly good original IP. This game makes me feel like I did playing the original Uncharted a couple of years ago-overall a great experience but room for a bit of improvement. I really believe that a polished sequel would be a strong GOTY contender in the future if they can avoid the trap of neglecting the single player game by wasting money and time on grafting in unnecessary multiplayer modes that all too often end up lackluster.

  • I love this game playing solo OR with my 4 year old. The fact that she can "enter a bubble" when things get rough make this a great game for parents to play with their kids.

  • I'm really enjoying this action RPG game. While the multiplayer is innovative/different, I would prefer if you could specifically choose to summon your buddy into your game without "tricking the system"

  • I played the 360 version. This is some of the best multiplayer fun I had this year. However, the lack of any solid single player brought it down a few places for me.

  • The PC release was in '08, but I am nominating the console versions from '09 (I played the 360 version). This is 2009's diablo clone. The game was fun both solo and multiplayer., but was pulled down my list a bit because it lacked polish.

  • I played the 360 version.

Simply put, I love westerns. While the single player story in this one was only mediocre, the Wild West Legends multiplayer mode was fantastic.

  • What can I say? I love loot. Like Sacred 2 and Borderlands above, this is another loot crawler game. In this case, it is a budget title that closely mirrors Diablo made by former Blizzard folks. However, it has a whimsical art style and even runs well on my low end PC. (If it will run on my PC, it will run on anybody's)
