@csl316: It actually looks pretty good on real N64 hardware considering the console standards. Because they weren't pushing ahead with 3D models they were able to push technology in different ways, like dynamic lights and a consistent 30 FPS. Considering the console, I think the graphically fidelity is pretty high. I could see how it's similar to Quake in its art design and, as much as I don't like the art design anymore, I don't necessarily dislike it and the moments when the game uses really saturated colors mixed with total darkness look pretty cool.

@rorie: Yeah, SMB 2 is a good analogy for this game. It feels like they were trying to capture the horror aspects that Doom sort of touched on, but it wasn't what it became known for over the years. It is absolutely an interesting game on its own merits though.

This looks extremely boring. Other than the shooting bits, this is one of the most unappealing games I've seen all year. Other than Days Gone.

@therealturk: Yeah, the credit concept got me too. Another thing I noticed but didn't really go into with the blog, was how the Angarans and Kett seem to have Milky Way-like (or, really, Earthly) motivations like greed, lust for power, dominance, freedom, etc. This is a brand new galaxy where anything is possible and the game falls back to old tropes. There are also little nitpicky leaps in logic like, say, Jaal translating a concept that has a unique Angaran name but a very Earthly definition (of course, right now, I can't think of an example). Not only would Jaal need to have a pretty great command of English to translate that concept but also of Milky Way, or specifically Human, cultures. But, if I remember right, he had done this already fairly soon after meeting us.

@bladeofcreation: I just looked it up and you’re totally right. Apparently it takes place between ME 2 and 3 and the initiative had nothing to do with the Reapers. I like how my comment about the game’s story geting off to a rough start, being wrong, takes place near the start of my blog.
