BC2: Vietnam for $30? BF3 on consoles? Stuff!

Battlefield 3

Wow! Rumors of Battlefield 3 have been floating around the internet for 2-3 years now, but there was never any official word from Electronic Arts until June 2009, when, during a financial call, Battlefield 3 was said to be a game that was "looking very good".

Not much of an announcement for such an anticipated title, right?

Then...

Since then, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 was released with quite high critical acclaim and sales. The support for the game has been adequate, considering the lag issues that never quite seem to be solved. The VIP map packs added new breath into the game, but were too slow to come out, or at times added too little content.

The prospect of a Bad Company 1 map pack seem grim, despite Electronic Arts asking if we would like Bad Company 1 maps, via the Battlefield facebook page. But Vietnam is on the horizon, what can we expect from that?

Vietnam

The Vietnam expansion will have 4 maps with Rush and Conquest, and will include vietnam-era weapons and vehicles. I can see EA charging $30 for the expansion (as the expansion for Dragon Age Origins -- Awakening -- was priced at $30) But is 30$ too much? From the sounds of it, there will be no single-player content, but if the each of the four maps support Rush, Conquest, Squad Rush, and Squad DM, and there are all of the vietnam weapons and vehicles, I think they can justify a $25 price-point.

So, what do you think about Vietnam? How much content would you want if EA were to charge $30?

Back to Battlefield 3...

So, Battlefield 3 got one poor announcement via a financial call, and now it get's announced via a beta-key tie in with the upcoming Medal of Honor?

So what's the deal with Battlefield 3, does EA not want to properly announce the game? They could have announced it at E3 with a trailer, but I am guessing they either A) did not want to over-saturate their conference with shooters or B) Battlefield 3 is not ready to show. At all.

I am leaning towards option B. Since nothing has been shown of Battlefield 3, and EA is being hesitant to talk about it, I am guessing it is in the early stages, despite being developed since 2009. Clearly someone at EA has some doubts about Medal of Honor, and decided that packing in a beta key for Battlefield 3 would help sales. From the looks of it, MoH needs all the help it can get on the multiplayer side of things.

Anyways... let's talk about Battlefield 3, shall we?

Up next... Battlefield 3.

Medal of Honor multiplayer looks a lot like Call of Duty...

EA did something that was pretty cool in my opinion: they did a live demo of Medal of Honor's multiplayer with 24 people. The actually lowered down 24 screens, and brought out 24 people to play on stage. They had a cool feed of all 24 screens up, and zoomed in on screens to get a better view of the action.

How does it look? Well, I hate to say this, but it looks a lot like cod in terms of core-gameplay mechanics. (although that might be nice to hear for some)

Also check-out the 24 player LAN party that they had going on.

The reticles look very similar, the guns look pretty similar, and the gameplay looked pretty similar. It even had... controllable predator missiles.

Although, where it differs is clearly where DICE decided to leave their mark. The maps look huge, some had hills, some had mountains, but the scope was there. Whether all of that will be playable map-space... I would say no, but I would say that some seem to be on the scale of MW2's Afghanistan, but better and more interesting.

There were also tanks, which is pretty cool. What do you guys think? Is this making itself look like MW3 so that it will capture that audience when people are deciding to go to the cold-war era for Black Ops?

Battlefield Bad Company 2: Vietnam expansion confirmed for winter

EA confirmed that an expansion pack for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 will be coming out this winter.

EA announced the expansion during their E3 presentation. It came with a trailer featuring the iconic Battlefield: Vietnam music, and a Huey flying through thick jungles. I will update this post with the trailer as soon as possible.

Check out the original BF: Vietnam trailer here.

The expansion will include 4 maps built in Frostbite, Rush, Conquest, Vietnam-specific weapons, vehicles, persistence, unlocks, and new achievements and trophies.

What are your thoughts? I personally would love a Vietnam expansion pack, but does it seem like a cheap way to build off of Black Op's hype?

Vietnam-themed expansion pack for Bad Company 2? Also, Gun Club.

I am going to use my handy rumor tags now...

<RUMOR>

A French gaming site, NoFrag, claims to have obtained one of EA's press release announcing EA's new loyalty program supposedly called "Gun Club". The press release includes the web address for the program (www.gunclub.ea.com) Although accessing it will prompt you for a password.

This program would give members early access to betas, demos, and other content. The wording in the press release seems off... there are typos and sentences that just don't make much sense.

The press release also mentions a "brand new expansion pack for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 taking place in Vietnam.

</RUMOR>

The full press release can be read at planetbattlefield.

I will be live-blogging EA's presentation at 5:00PM eastern/2pm pacific from my T.V. Yup.

The State of the Battlefield Franchise: Battlefield: 1943

Battlefield: 1943

Battlefield; 1943 was very successful, selling over 1 million copies on the Xbox alone. Again, knowing EA, it seems silly that they failed to capitalize on 1943's success bynot releasing any DLC maps or other content, and never releasing it on the PC. (Although DICE has said there still are plans to release it, I tried suggesting that they just integrate it into Bad Company 2 on the PC, but no dice. (hah, see what I did there?)

I personally believe it is too late for new maps for 1943: Pacific, but there are a number of other themes for a future $15 game. Battlefield: Europe is an obvious choice, but there is Battlefield Vietnam and Battlefield 2142 that could benefit from some Frostbite action and renewed life.

But is there still room for another, smaller-scale shooter? When 1943 was released, there were very little new multiplayer games at the time, and it was summertime after all and the idea of fighting on the lush islands of the Pacific appealed to many people. And it was World War II, and despite World at War, it seemed like all of the shooters were heading towards the "modern warfare" genre. Additionally, 1943 was able to capitlize on the immense success of Battlefield: 1942, which won numerous awards and whose multiplayer was popular with many video game publications and gamers.

1943: Europe would be able to have similar success, providing the destruction was brought to BC2's level (even refined a bit more) and the class customization was expanded a bit past the "Pick One of These Three Classes" way of 1943.

Different eras would also do a bit to change it up, Vietnam might seem a bit strange if it was released after Black Ops, and the game on PC wasn't as popular as 1942 orBF2, but if they add all of the music and and vehicles from Battlefield: Vietnam into a downloadable game, I could see that being a lot of fun. Battlefield: 2143 seems like a great idea for me, imagine having titans, mechs and helicopters all for only $15! I would assume it would require a lot more resources than 1943, but it would be worth it.

Maybe we will see some sort of downloadable Battlefield announcement at E3... hey, I can dream, can't I?

EA will power-level your solider. Just give them your monies.

Hey there paying customer! Did you recently purchase Battlefield: Bad Company 2? Are you sick and tired of high level characters killing you with their M60s with 4x scopes?

Suffer no more! Introducing "Kit-Shortcuts", and with a small price of $6.99 per-kit, or $19.99 for all kits and vehicles, we will give you all of the unlocks for that kit! That's right, give us $6.99 and you won't have to level up and unlock those weapons.

I am glad EA is providing such a useful service for such a reasonable price.

Don't believe me? Check the blog here.

Bad Company 1 Maps on the Horizon?

Today, the Official Battlefield Facebook page, operated by Electronic Arts, updated its status with a simple question:

If DICE were to do a Bad Company 1 map pack for Bad Company 2, what maps would you like to see?

You may remember DICE saying they do not want to charge for maps, but EA said they could not guarantee that (link to story), it seems like this Facebook update might be the start of future Bad Company 2 map expansions, most likely as paid DLC.

Now, DICE has posed questions to the community before, namely: "Do you want the ability to add optics to the G3 and M14?"
DICE never did anything about that despite the large amount of feedback asking for them to add that feature in.

But now, things are different, it is not DICE asking the community themselves, it seems that EA is stepping in.

Would you pay for Bad Company 1 maps?

I encourage everyone to go to the Facebook page and comment on the status, saying you would love the maps from BC1. I believe that if EA sees enough demand for maps, they will step in and get DICE to make more content.

But, there is the chance that EA will not do that, and despite the feedback, will shift DICE almost entirely over to Medal of Honor, so please, tell EA that you want more maps, because I know I sure do.

The State of the Battlefield Franchise: Battlefield 3

Battlefield 3

Battlefield 3 was supposedly announced in June 2009, by John Pleasants, EA's chief operating officer at the time.

I've had the luxury of looking at Battlefield 3 over at DICE in Sweden and was highly impressed by the way the team is working on that product," he said. "Of course, that's not [coming out] in the fiscal year, but that is a product that is looking very good.

Now, I am not totally convinced by this comment, and I still think he might have mistaken Bad Company 2 with Battlefield 3. Although since EA never publicly corrected the comment, maybe it was accurate.

So, assuming Battlefield 3 was in development in June 2009, and is "looking very good", it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to assume we will hear some news at E3. Although I am not sure how DICE will balance Bad Company and Battlefield. Bad Company 2 was well received on the PC, but it still wasn't Battlefield 3.

Will DICE release Battlefield 3 for the consoles? If they do, it would have to be a Modern Combat type of situation, where the console game is pretty different from the PC version. Unless DICE can really optimize the code for Frostbite, I doubt we will be seeing large-scale conquest maps like in BF2, especially if you add in destruction. The best thing for DICE to do is to keep the standard Battlefield for PC-only, but also work on Bad Company as a PC+Console release, while still supporting it.

Ideally, DICE would announce Battlefield 3 with a trailer at E3, for PC only. But let's be honest, after the huge success of BC2 and 1943 on the consoles, EA isn't going to divert all of the resources towards BF3, and will surely have some future Battlefield plans for consoles.

Changelist for patch 1.04 (For PS3 AND Xbox 360)

Here is the official changelist for the 1.04 patch, which will be rolling out today and tomorrow, depending on your location.
EDIT: There has been a bit of confusion about the patches, so let me try to explain this.
 The PS3 patches are 1.02, 1.03, 1.04 etc. The change-list below is for PS3 1.04.

  • Vehicles can now be damaged by friendly fire when playing Hardcore.
  • The MG36 now properly has its red dot sight in Hardcore.
  • Damaged vehicles no longer blink on the minimap for soldiers without a powertool.
  • SPECACT kits can be used on all SDM and SR levels.
  • 40mm Shotgun is now properly rewarded platinum at 500 kills not 1000.
  • G3 and Mk14 can now use the AR Marksman specialization.
  • Fixed a graphical issue when equipping the GOL with a 4x or Red Dot sight.
  • Scoring is now awarded after a player’s death.
  • Increased Tickets in Conquest mode and significantly increased Ticket Bleed when holding a majority or more of flags.
  • The Conquest Horn now only plays for a short time when running low on Tickets.
  • Updated the weapon stats in the Menu to reflect previous weapon balance changes (no additional weapon balance changes were made).
  • Increased the power of the UH-60 miniguns at long range.
  • Armored Vehicles are now more effective at running over soldiers.
  • Fixed an issue on Isla Inocentes where destroying a fence would also destroy the building containing an MCom.
  • Fixed various hangs and exploits.

Now, this optional title update (called Multiplayer Update 1 by people at DICE) will be released tomorrow for the Xbox 360.
According the official Battlefield Blog, an optional update for the Xbox 360 will also be released that contains "numerous gameplay tweaks". According to Bazajaytee, a player can decline the update, but will be unable to play on the new servers. " Old clients = old servers, updated clients = new servers."

A lot of the gameplay balances seem fair, an increase to the Blackhawks guns is nice, and I love increasing the effectiveness of running over soldiers.
I can also appreciate the changes to conquest, an increase of starting tickets is nice,  but a big change to ticket bleed when holding a majority of the flags should make people concentrate on holding flags, and make conquest less of a deathmatch.

Oh, and they reduced the duration of the conquest horn..

I am currently trying to get more details about the two different updates (360 and PS3), stay tuned.
