Artistically, this is great. They nailed the 80's and 90's anime style with the 2D illustrations. But the part where it's a game, not so much. There's no music, the mech movement is super slow and it generally misses any kind of pizzazz. And there's the commentary. Bummer.
In addition to what you've said, it seems like they also skimped on the most important part about 80's / 90's anime - quality impactful animation.
These characters and their illustrations look cool in this game, but they either barely animate... or are poorly animated (see the jump jets on the mech when Alex was piloting the CRGI mech - ZERO body animation at all - literally just moving the position of the mech).
For anyone unfamiliar and perhaps uninterested in Dragon Ball Z but is at least curious about what it is - I recommend this 2-minute very entertaining and very compressed TL;DW of the first season.
Around 2:15, in that village I could have sworn that's literally the exact angle and building arrangement of what that village right outside of Midgar looked like in FFVII.
