UT3 on Steam

Steam tossed out a news post yesterday stating that you can register your retail Unreal Tournament 3 key with Steam and effectively integrate it into your Steam account. Just did that, totally redownloading UT3 now via Steam. It's cool when developers work to make all this stuff play together nicely, rather than separate the disc users and Steam users. Now I can get Steam acheviements in UT3... when they release the next patch, that is.

UT3 got a bum rap. It's a heck of a game, but shooters have kind of moved on from the sort of thing that the UT series offers. So I guess I agree that it feels a bit stale these days. Plus, it probably didn't change enough to automatically appeal to the ridiculously heavy mod scene that popped up around the previous game. I'm going to check and see if there are any decent maps and mods out there these days, as I haven't played it in a pretty long time.

It's sad that this game lacks the content and compatibility of UT04. I was really expecting something.

I bought this one on Steam over the holiday. I think it's great. I mean, in age where shooters take themselves pretty serious, I appreciate the kinda arcady feel of this... No real penalty for dying, just jump back in... I'm really looking forward to the patch. And Props to Steam and Epic for totally giving a break to the consumer. STEAM 4 LIFE!

For whatever reasons, UT has never really appealed to me.  I've had numerous chances to get it for $20 or less, but I still can't justify a purchase.  I'll have to try it out at some point, just so I can have an actual opinion on it.

The only UT game I played was the first Unreal at a friends house. I never really got into that series but UT3 looked like it was a pretty cool game.

This is pretty pointless news. Honestly, if you don't know better already, (I assume you do) Ut3 is a complete shit game compared to other UT times, especially 2004. UT3 isn't even considered a UT game by the still thriving UT community playing other titles still, mainly 2004.

Last time I heard, worldwide there were only about 2-5 servers up at any given time, and most were empty. The community is dead for this game because they don't want it.

Despite being a pretty avid fan of first person shooters I've never really had much interest in the UT series, despite the fact that I've had multiple opportunities to pick up UT2K4 for pretty cheap.

Depending on the price I may try this game out - just to see what this franchise is all about, I could probably go for some mindless deathmatching right about now to be honest.

I never was able to see if UT3 was anygood...
I heard it was all MP, and no Single Player.

I may play again, maybe the achievements and improved server browsing are worth something.

All this really means for me is more tickets though.

I'll also toss in a plug for a friend's mod.

Really hope the patch gives the community some life. Online/UI issues aside, UT3 deserved better.

UT3 was a bit antiquated, but I got it for $20 and had fun with it. It is not bad at all...just a bit old despite its technological prowess.

Sweet. So now I can grab a cheap copy and then register it in Steam? Sweet. There aren't enough third-party games that do that.

UT3 really was a good game. I got it for ps3, but im sure its even better on PC. It played it safe by being the same game, but looking better. I can see the complaints.

More points for you! I didn't hear good things about UT3 so I avoided it. Probably still will.

Personally, I don't get why people are so down on this game.  The multiplayer was excellent, better and more balanced in many areas than what UT04 had to offer.  The speed was just right, and I can understand that it seems a bit stale.  There wasn't much of a change from 04, but I look at it like this:  if it ain't broke, don't fix it.  The UT04 formula is definitely in effect in UT3, but for some reason, it just didn't catch the same way that 04 did.  Maybe it was the poor distribution by Midway.  I don't know.

And sure, the mod scene isn't huge on it, but whatever.  I don't rely on the mod scene to make a game bigger and better.  While the UT series is known for this side of things, I can be content for hours upon end with the base content of a game.  Just look at L4D!!!

It's definitely cool to see that they are going to be offering this through Steam.

Maybe this'll breathe new life into the game for awhile. I couldn't believe how fucking dead the entire community was only weeks after release.

If you're looking for a UT game, get 2k4. It's like 5 bucks, has thousands of amazing mods, and is an all around better game than UT3. UT3 was an abortion of the UT formula, and it tried to do way too many things that just don't work for the series. There is a reason that Unreal Tournament 2004's multiplayer community is still one of the strongest on the internet, and UT3's is mostly dead.

This probably won't help the fact that it runs like ass on my ancient PC, but it might help with the fact that I lose my settings every fucking time I play the thing.  Plus, saving me the effort of searching out patches, or even digging out my discs, is always a positive.

I've always considered buying the game but I never got around to it, I never knew the online community for it was that small. If another arcadey FPS deathmatch game game out (crossing my fingers that Timesplitters 4 will come into existence still) I'd quite happily play it, I guess, I don't see them as dated at all, it'd be a nice change from all the super-serious shooting games out nowadays.

I wish all games could support the authentication of retail keys if the games are on Steam. God, Steam has really come up from a bad service in the beginning to a great standard of online distribution and my favorite part: CD free gaming.

I would greatly appreciate it if Steam would recognize my store-bought BioShock key.

Ahem.

If you really want it, bother the publisher. Valve doesn't care if the retail keys work on Steam or not.

UT3 was bad ass and the total conversion mods too. I need to reinstall it with Steam when I'm not lazy.

Yes, I'm well aware of this; I read it at the time.  That doesn't make it less annoying.
