Humbly Ranked Bundled Games List

There was a time when I personally wet myself at the release of each new Humble Indie Bundle. While it has largely passed, I've gotten a ton of games from these deals and have managed to play several of them. Here's my authoritative ranking of them.

List items

  • GOD TIER: VVVVVV is one of a handful of games I'd consider repurchasing at some point. The 3DS release of the game would probably render me unable to do anything but tell people to play VVVVVV for months. Simple mechanic, increasing focus on execution, beautiful soundtrack, nail biting ending sequence...and it doesn't overstay its welcome. Just get it. (HIB 3)

  • I came to this game about a year late, but managed to remain largely unspoiled. Still have my notebook. Another game whose soundtrack got a shocking amount of play time.

  • SOLID TIER:

  • Perhaps the least "game" a game can be while still satisfying my personal definition of said. You wander around for about 45 minutes and then float into the sky. That's the digs. However, I'd move into the Proteus world right now if given the opportunity. This is an outstanding, brief, experiential game that you might only play once. That said, I found that experience profound enough to put it fairly high on this list.

  • I wish I could rank this higher in good faith, but between its crazy difficulty curve (cakewalk until 1-11, cakewalk through all of world 2, cakewalk to vertical wall at the end of world 3) and its repetitive nature (the checkpoints in RUNNER 2 make it a thousand times the game this is) force me to shunt it down this far.

  • MEH TIER: Three star territory. Samorost 2 is a twee Flash adventure game. It is about as breezy and inconsequential a thing as I can conceive, but it stands up on the strength of its surreal, desaturated art style.

  • 25 score attack levels with Tony Hawk-esque challenges to beat and online leaderboards.

  • Damsel in distress story, a more violent version of the Double Dragon trope but minus any of the levity in that title. Ugly, shallow, brutal game.

  • Just kind of a sloppy physics sim. Shares some DNA with something like Scribblenauts, in that some of the puzzles can be solved with the iterating on the same two or three cheap strats over and over again.

  • You walk a mopey man up a hill and he jumps off at the end. All the while he mopes about a former romantic partner? I don't mind me a "walking sim", but this was insufferable.

  • SHIT TIER: Among the worst things I've played. I'm not dogging on this game due to any sort of anti-furry stance or whatever. It's just an ugly thing with dreadful controls and a popcorn fart of a story to lead you through it. (HIB 1)
