Accessorise

So you might be aware I just bought a bunch of accessories for my PlayStation 3. It’s now my most heavily accessorised console ever. And that’s cool, because accessories are awesome. So let’s take a look at the ones I just got and see if they’re cool.

Joytech 3-Way HDMI Switcher

This is a really nifty product. I use it so that both my PS3 and my 360 can be hooked up to my sole HDMI port at once. It can be powered via the wall or via USB (I use the latter, drawing the power from my Mac’s keyboard) and there’s an IR Receiver extender, so you can hide the switcher and still give the remote line-of-sight.

So far, it’s been flawless. All I had to do was hook the consoles up, fiddle some settings on the Xbox 360 and it’s been running fine ever since. There’s no drop in video quality, so everything still looks great.

GioTeck EX-01 Bluetooth Headset

I didn’t initially want to buy a Bluetooth headset, I was hoping for a USB number. But when that proved hard to find and I came across the GioTeck 4 Essential PS3 Peripherals Pack, I did a little research and decided if I had to go with a Bluetooth headset, this one fit the bill.

The EX-01 is designed specifically for gaming. And it kind of shows. The headset’s extremely comfortable even after long wear times and it’s really light, weighing only enough so that you know it’s there. Pairing it to the PS3 was easy thanks to the included Quick-Start guide and the sound quality at least matches the wired Xbox 360 headset.

So colour me impressed with this one. It also matches the PS3 pretty damn well, I must say.

GioTeck RealTriggers

Yes, I have the concave RealTriggers in all their PascalCase glory. They came as part of the aforementioned bundle and fit really easily onto the R2 and L2 buttons, literally sliding and then lightly clipping into place.

Visually, they look a little awkward - especially from the bottom. They also make the bottom back of the controller look kind of bulk. But, where it counts, they shine. They’re extremely comfortable and I find they allow greater accuracy in terms of how far you want to pull he trigger back - plus, your finger doesn’t slip off so easily.

The ‘Triggers really feel like they were designed by gamers. So consider me impressed.

VGA 4-Port USB Mini-Hub

This is a dinky and unobtrusive USB hub. That’s not particularly exciting, but it’s pretty good. I use it for my Flash Drive (The one I use for the PS3 is branded Microsoft Research. Irony. I got it as a free gift the day I demo’d Surface), charging the headset and the receivers for my Remote and the second controller (An RF-whielding Third Party number my parents bought) .

This is a pretty handy accessory especially if (like me) you got your PS3 after Sony reduced the number of USB Ports to two.

I have mine stuck to the desk above the mouse in front of the PS3 (The IR receiver for the HDMI switcher is just next to it in fact) but you can shove it anywhere you like, it’s pretty enough to allow it to be seen and small enough to hide it if you so desire.

Anywho, that’s a little roundup of my recent accessories splurge. For those of you interested, my PS3 now has all the following accessories:

  • Stand with 2 Blu-Ray Case Holders

  • RF Controller with TurboFire

  • IR Remote Control for Blu-Ray/DVD Playback

  • Flash Drive

  • GioTeck EX-01 Bluetooth Headset

  • Joytech 3-Way HDMI Switcher

  • GioTeck RealTriggers

  • VGA 4-Port USB Mini-Hub

And all this, just because I love it.
