@navster15 sorry, I may not have been clear. I saw the harassment and threats as the tweets were public and not dm's. So yeah they exist and they shouldn't especially given the context.

Like I can understand some harsh and potentially over the line comments from victims against their abusers. Totally understandable. But wishing death on someone or their family for buying or playing a game just screws up the message. And if you target a person with a large follower base it's even worse.

I agree that if someone stoops so low as to send you a death threat that doesn't mean you win an argument with them. My comments aren't about who is right or wrong in the debate. They are about how some are trying to help but are making it worse.

Also yeah twitter is a hell hole. I thought though that it's probably the space that it has the most potential to reach mainstream buy in.

While I had "heard" about there being controversy with JKR years ago I never really read up on the details or investigated the matter myself.

My re-introduction to this whole situation arrived when some GB staff would moan when a trailer for Hogwarts Legacy came up during events. That piqued my interest and I looked into what would create that response. I'm not well versed on all events that have lead to this moment, I can't quote what people have said or written, and I don't know the details of what financial arrangements have been funded or put in place.

I take it that some members from the trans community and their supporters take extreme offense at comments and actions made by JKR. Ok, that is their choice to make. In addition, there are a bunch of terrible people that are directly assaulting (verbally, physically, emotionally etc) people in this group on a daily basis. I wish platform holders were better at removing this kind of behaviour from their services. It's saddening that online or offline we can't eliminate belligerent mindsets.

Now with all that said. The discourse I've seen around this game is not entirely captured in the above paragraph.

In addition to the above, I have seen some pretty horrible abuse (in the league of death threats) sent to some people on Twitter, seemingly, because they said they were either going to purchase or stream the game online. The people targeted were not abusing others or harassing people.

I think this is where the pushback against the boycott comes from. The general public may see a prominent person receive vile abuse for purchasing something that to them seems innocuous. While they don't see the history of a community grappling with hate, they do see abuse. It just so happens they see abuse of people outside the trans community and this undercuts the entire message about safety, and inclusion.

TLDR: the entire LGBTQ+ community has dealt with so much shit over the years when they shouldn't have had to. This continues including in the space of Hogwarts Legacy. Unfortunately, some in the trans community raged out and sent some vile abuse to people who were not attacking the trans community. The bystanders watching this are confused when both parties have shitheads with no moral high ground.

Edits: typos, oh and I would put myself in the category of a trans community supporter having advocated for change in my area, but I think some in the trans community might disagree if I end up purchasing this game.

Did you play much multiplayer in the RoR1? I only played it solo. When that final mission ramped up the damage numbers got pretty ridiculous.

Watching the clip above I can see they are heading that direction again so they are clearly looking to have it feeling similar despite changing up the gameplay so dramatically with a whole new dimension added.

I couldn't see a recent thread about this so, I decided to start one.

I came across Risk of Rain 2 via the Humble Store and was surprised as I hadn't been actively looking to see if a sequel was being developed. Actually that characterises my suprise incorrectly, I had hoped a sequel would come considering Risk of Rain was a favourite of mine years ago but the fact that the sequel is in 3D was a big shock.

Anyway I'm looking forward to seeing more about this. I think the GB crew (Jeff and Alex specifically) really dug the original so a quick look/unfinished from either coast would be cool to see.

anyway here's some gameplay if you haven't seen it.

Happened to look through my steam list and note that BL2 was one of those games that I'd devoted a significant amount of my time playing. Much more than most. Twice I tried jumping into Pre-Sequel and twice I bounced off pretty quickly.

My problems with the existing Borderlands can be summed up in a few points but take them in the context of the following. I only play Borderlands solo.

1. Much of the game uses old MMO design tropes.

  • It's easy to point to the numerous quests that revolve around Kill 10 "things" or collect 5 "objects" but that isn't as bad as the points to come.
  • Being forced to navigate over the same environments many times which respawn enemies makes my actions in this area feel undervalued. Sure I can get some loot but without greater motivation then I am just pulling a lever on the slot machine. These areas are just padding out the game and don't add to the experience. Diablo at least randomises the layouts (note - Hellgate tried this and it was ok but not great) but failing that just have a shorter but more gripping run through like say, Doom.
  • NPC's can have great introductions with well animated sequences but after that they become almost lifeless mailboxes that you go to for quests. If you see they have the MMO "!" icon then cool go get a quest. Unfortunately that quest is delivered in text like an email, while I stand in front of this person. Compare this to the Mass Effect trilogy. In Mass Effect there is often an animated, natural conversation that leads to a quest. I'm not saying Borderlands needs a dialogue system, I just think that modern games like these should move beyond the quest pop up delivery method as it feels like a quantity vs quality trade-off.
I feel like if you really cared you would at least look at me, or you know talk to me...

2. There is a real lack of character customization.

  • If the story doesn't rely on who I play as why force me to look like "X" if I want "Y" skills?
  • Adding to the above, I need way more than colour (Aussie spelling) palettes if I already don't like how I am portrayed. At the bare minimum can I pick my gender?
Why force everyone that wants to dual wield to be a white guy with a mohawk?
Why force everyone that wants to dual wield to be a white guy with a mohawk?

3. Looting is sooooo slow.

  • This is what pushed me off my recent attempt at Pre-Sequel. Having to wait for each chest/box/container to animate open to see what was inside was infuriating when they are almost everywhere. At some point it occurred to me that I don't have to open them, but then why have them? To annoy the person that does open them? Hopefully there is a quality of life improvement in BL3 for this.

4. The UI is very outdated

  • While at the time the UI was visually interesting and mostly functional there have been many advancements in UI design since BL2. Its such a crucial element to the user experience I really hope they examine what players need, and want to do on any given screen and ensure that it's easy and seamless. Large dev teams have a knack for valuing form over function - I'm looking at you Bethesda.
What is even happening here? The visual heirarchy is all over the place.
What is even happening here? The visual heirarchy is all over the place.

So what from the BL3 trailer looks to address any of those? Nothing. Which bums me out. Especially when I just watched the BL2 trailer which is almost identical. Does every BL launch trailer now need a dance sequence with claptrap? Or maybe it's meant to be referential... I don't know.

Here's hoping they just released a meh trailer and there's significant changes and info about them to come.
