3DS Virtual Console/3D Classics Nominations: Home Console Edition

With the much appreciated announcement that the 3DS will not only have a diverse Virtual Console, but a "3D Classics" section where old games are reimagined in 3D, it's time to update my nominations list for games previously only on home consoles. This will probably be restricted to Generations 1-4, as I covered a great deal of Gen. 5 and 6 stuff in the "3DS Remake Wishlist", which deals with similar themes.

List items

  • The original Sonic the Hedgehog was an eye-opener for players in 1991 for, among other things, its vibrant colour palette, incredibly creative level design and stunning parallax scrolling graphics. Adding 3D effects to this classic could add another layer of depth (pun probably intended) for the graphical impact of this classic. As it it Sonic's 20th Anniversary this year (and how SEGA loves to re-release this game ad infinitum), this might be a nice way to reaffirm and pay tribute to the hedgehog's enduring legacy.

  • The most popular and well-loved of the Sonic games (whether or not players remember it as such) is another logical choice to be updated for the 3DS. In addition to the graphical boost, a 3DS Sonic 2 remake could potentially take advantage of the original's main selling point: Two-player co-op. A second player with another console and another copy of the game (or perhaps via download play) could take control of Tails and join in on the action. Nintendo and SEGA could potentially also do something with StreetPass, perhaps as a way to exchange data and records.

  • This arcade classic got players' attention with its for-the-time revolutionary vector graphics pseudo-3D perspective. The obvious 3DS enhancement then would be real stereoscopic 3D, although the many and varied multiplayer options available to the console call to mind ideas for leaderboards, wireless multiplayer and STreetPass support.

  • This Atari classic practically invented space flight simulators and was a technical marvel for the time. It's still a remarkably complex game even by today's standards, Star Raiders remains one of the best of its kind. A 3D upgrade could add a drop of realism to the game's art style, perhaps with additional graphical polishing (though perhaps not).
