Top 10 FPS of all time.

Including all types of "pure" shooters. So this list will not include hybrids like Deus Ex or Borderlands. And no Third person shooters that kinda becomes first person when aiming like Gears of War.
Also, this list can as usual be made in many different ways depending on the day I write it.
Games that arguably deserves a mention even tho they are not on the list :
- Doom 2
- Doom 3
- Halo: Combat Evolved
- Unreal Tournament 2000
- Soldier of Fortune
- Half-Life 2
- Killzone 2
- Call of Duty
- Sin
- Wolfenstein 3D

List items

  • The real grandfather of FPS with so much backstory to its creation that it cannot be ignored as the best. Invented both the singleplayer and the multiplayer shooter (with some cornerstones from Wolf 3D of course) and set down standards when it comes to weapon, monster and leveldesign that are pretty much a checklist for similar games today. And the thing is.. it still holds up as a really fun game to play even to this date.

  • Revolutionized multiplayer shooters with the most responsive deathmatch to date. Carried the progaming scene onwards into the year 2000 and beyond and hooked me for years with its fast adrenaline pumping gameplay. Q3 is extremely important for the fantastic progaming community and still goes strong with the release of Quake Live.

  • I stand by my opinion that this game has the best single player experience of any first person shooter ever. The art direction, the weapondesign, the sound effects, the soundtrack and the flawless leveldesign. This is ID´s masterpiece when it comes to single player mapdesign and atmosphere. As usual with ID titles it drove the PC graphics race into a craze as usual and the game had a huge impact when it was released.

  • The creation of the Unreal engine and the real breakthrough for Epic Games. A mysterious and very thick atmosphere and way more agressive and flexible enemies than one were used to at the time made this go down in history. The Unreal engine was really showing what a PC could do while top notch leveldesign / creative weapons added further to the absolute classic status of this game.

On a sidenote the first hour of this game is still one of the most atmospheric ever.

  • The advancement of the Doom formula and the start of something really big. Just like Doom, Quake took everything shooter and 3D tech and advanced it even further. This was the game that allowed them to then perfect the Quake formula with Quake 2 and 3 and the industrial/goth/hellish graphical design was quite mindblowing at the time even tho its looked back on like brown and plain.

  • The only real competitor to Quake 3 Arena. Sporting an updated Unreal engine and an excellent system for a smooth, frantic online experience. Cliff Bleszinski perfected his not as famous career as leveldesigner as he created some of the best DM maps ever and the music is some of the best you´ll ever hear in a shooter.

  • Took the Quake 2 engine and tweaked the living hell out of it as it brought a new kind of storytelling and campaign progression into the genre. The start of something really big for Valve that succeeded with the levels and presentation like few before them.

  • Much like serious sam, Painkiller went for a core shooting experience and did so with precision! A huge omage to action of old that never took itself seriously while still managing to be one helluva shooter. It nailed down the basics of a well programmed engine, crazy laugh inducing weapons, a rocking soundtrack, fantastic maps and great looking stuff to shoot in the face. Also featured huge bosses and some destructible environments.

  • Remember when WW2 was still fresh? Nope, me neither.. well almost. I still remember Allied Assault and what a rollercoaster ride it was. I think we can all think back on that Normandy stage and declare that this game deserves a spot on this list. And here we are 8 years later still milking the crazy that Allied Assasult started in 2002.
