GOTY 2017

Games I would have liked to play, but haven't had the time/money to:

  • Total War: Warhammer 2
  • Night in the Woods
  • What Remains of Edith Finch
  • Nioh
  • Battle Chef Brigade
  • Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun
  • Hellblade (This one would likely be on the list)
  • Hollow Knight
  • Prey
  • Injustice 2

At least I'll have a lot to play in the game release downtime.

List items

  • I think I'm about 70 hours into Persona 5 and still have not finished it. The characters, world, style and combat all mesh so goddamn well that it feels like the perfect JRPG package. I have enjoyed every minute I've spent with P5 so far, and hope to enjoy many more.

  • My god. It won't work for everyone but it sure worked for me. The game play grew quite stale for me by the latter half but that didn't hinder the outright genius that is the story, world and message behind this game.

Austin Walker summed it up best: “[Everything] ends up being this second layer conversation that isn’t just ‘are robots people,’ it’s ‘what the fuck are people?’”

  • This game is simultaneously an exercise in reductionism and broad creative vision that it has to be commended. The true joy of this game is watching the individually simple systems play off each other in surprising and fun ways. Not my favorite Zelda story, but the world is astounding.

  • This game rewards the "What if" section of your brain like no other. Each combat encounter feels like a puzzle in the way the best CRPGs should. I love it and wish I had more time to put into it.

  • HUNTING ROBOT DINOSAURS IS REALLY COOL. Also a pretty neat post-post-apocalypse story.

  • This game is a buggy piece of shit and I love it. Getting my first chicken dinner was one of the biggest gaming achievements I've ever had.

  • Possibly the best platformer I've ever played and with the introduction of Cappy it opened up so many new possibilities for gameplay.

  • I spent a lot of time with Splatoon 2, it feels like a long delayed Dreamcast game. Genuine, fresh fun.

  • Just look at it.

  • This game had such a cool vibe that it had to be on the list, really stuck with me like most Supergiant games do. I also found the basketball game play surprisingly fun.
