E3 2012

List items

  • I'm a huge fan of the Hitman series, and just edges out The Last of Us for my top spot for no other reason than the fact that we'll actually get to play in in 2012.

  • Naughty Dog has yet to let me down with the Uncharted games, and now they're crafting a game that combines the open-ended gameplay of stealth-action games like Hitman and Splinter Cell with bleak, post-apocalyptic survival horror. This looks to be everything I wanted I Am Alive to be, and then some.

  • Seeing a pattern in my game tastes yet? Open-ended gameplay that encourages stealth? Cyberpunk-style hacking and espionage? And the apparent presence of some sort of online persistence? It's hard NOT to be impressed with Watch Dogs. The only reason it lands at #3 is because I'm still not convinced the game we saw at E3 is going to be what ends up landing on our current-gen consoles, and unlike many games at E3, Ubisoft isn't even touting the generic "2013" as a release date. This is a "it'll come out when it's done" sort of thing, which still strikes me as next-gen talk, no matter what Yves Guillemot tells us.

  • I'm not sure if any game series has ever captured my imagination from a narrative standpoint more than Halo. Like many others, I've lost many days to Halo's competitive multiplayer, and even more searching for skulls, terminals, and easter eggs all in an effort to absorb more of the universe. I don't think this will be my favorite game of 2012, but it may very well be the game I sink the most hours into when all is said and done.

  • I spent entire weekends in high school playing Super Smash Bros with my friends. We've all grown up, moved around, become adults. But we never stopped playing games, and the idea of an online Smash Bros-style game without the frustration of Nintendo's online service is extremely appealing to me, regardless of the game's roster.

  • I will always give Splinter Cell a chance, and Blacklist looks like it's headed in the right direction. It seems to combine the quick killing, room clearing action from Conviction with a the more traditional spy action from the first three Splinter Cell games.

  • Indigo Prophecy remains one of my favorite games of last generation, and Heavy Rain is easily one of my favorites from the current one. I will always give David Cage and Quantic Dream attention. That said, I would like to see some gameplay footage.

  • Much like Watch Dogs, this game made waves at E3. But we still don't have a firm grasp of what platforms this game will ultimately land on, and all we've seen of the gameplay so far is a short, albeit impressive looking cover-based shooting sequence. Anything Star Wars related has my attention, an M-rated Star Wars game focusing on the seedy parts of Coruscant is even better.

  • Perhaps the unofficial torchbearer of #YEAROFTHEBOW, it seems Crystal Dynamics has finally been given the leash to bring Tomb Raider to the modern era, and as a result we're getting what appears to be an amalgamation of Assassin's Creed and Uncharted. I'm especially interested in the survival aspects of the game - hunting for food and creating a camp in the wilderness has piqued my interest.
