I bought a motorcycle. Any other Giant Bomb riders out there?

After years of driving vehicles that didn't belong to me, I've finally purchased my own—and it's a motorcycle. A Honda 919, to be exact.

No Caption Provided

I decided I wanted a motorcycle a while back, and it took a while to make it a reality. I had to sign up for a motorcycle safety and training course that would provide me with a completion card, which bypasses the skills test for a motorcycle endorsement at the DMV. The class also saves me money on insurance, so I figured it was the best route to take. There was a wait list for the class, but I eventually made it through that three day extravaganza. After I paid some fees and obtained my new license, I went out looking for a bike. Craigslist was my best friend. After scouring it for quite some time, I found the bike you see above, sent out a hopeful text message to the owner offering slightly less than the asking price, and the rest is history.

I haven't been on it a ton yet, but thus far it's been astoundingly fun to ride. I'm doing my best to ride as safely as possible, especially as I'm still a beginner learning a new bike. That said, it's easy to quickly find myself ten miles per hour over the speed limit.

I've been acquiring gear piecemeal, and I almost have everything I feel I should. I'm waiting on a jacket to arrive, which should be Wednesday. Living in Oregon, I also am going to need some rain pants that I can throw on over whatever I'm regularly wearing. But I have a nice helmet, comfy gloves, and even a backpack with some nice motorcycle-friendly features.

Right now my biggest concern is having the thing stolen, so I'm looking into some disc locks and things of that nature. I actually spent way too long reading a Reddit forum where people asked questions to an ex motorcycle thief. The takeaway was that if someone wants to steal your bike, they're going to. The best you can do is to make the process as long and painful as possible for them, and hope that after assessing the risk, they choose to move on. Luckily my 919 doesn't fit the description of the most valued bikes to steal. My bike is both old and basic enough to hopefully not draw too much attention. It's no Ninja or CBR.

Anyway, I'm pretty excited about owning a motorcycle. I look forward to improving my riding skills and enjoying many years of blissful riding.

As the title suggests, I'd love to hear about any fellow Giant Bomb riders' experiences! What kinds of bikes do you guys ride?

I have a bicycle, but I want a motorcycle. Does that count? But fer real, I plan on moving to the Southwest US in a year or so, and I think I'm gonna spring for one then. I can't really justify it now when there is snow and rain for like six months out of the year.

I've been riding for twenty years. Nice bike but...it's not something I would have ever recommended for a first time rider. The best advice I can give you is check your tires' condition and pressure before every ride...it's not a car, if one of your tires is damage or low, you're screwed. Besides that, get yourself some leather or armored pants and actual motorcycle boots, don't ride in jeans, sneakers, and a Joe Rocket nylon jacket that you spent $75 on. (What kind of jacket did you get? I hope it was leather.)

Also, get some frame sliders. You will drop that bike soon and spending fifty bucks can save you from some expensive repairs and may save you from the bike crushing one of your legs between it and the ground.

@mb: I know it's not the best bike to start on, but I gathered lots of opinions on the matter beforehand, and it seems agreed upon that it's also not the worst. I have a buddy who knows quite a bit about bikes, and he's recommended frame sliders as well, though I hope they never need to be used. I'm definitely taking it slow. I'm not a "spirited" rider.

The jacket I bought isn't leather (wouldn't be great in this weather anyway), but it's a nice Scorpion jacket. Has armor and everything. I'm hoping it'll serve me well.

Also, thanks for the tire tip. I'll make sure to keep on top of that.

@lubermans: It's a 2002

@fengshuigod: A bicycle totally counts. Just strap an engine onto it, ha.

I've been riding for nearly two years. Suzuki TU250X. I had my first accident the other day, some guy reversed into me.

Best piece of advice I can give: pretend you're invisible. Seriously, most drivers don't look out for motorbikes. My accident was minor, but it reminded me just how quickly things can go bad.

Also, if you haven't already check out some motorbike forums. The license test only teaches you so much.

I so want to be one, but the whole process in Ireland and the UK is stupid.

Assuming I already have a provisional licence. I'd have to do a CBT for £100, which is fine, that would let me ride a 125 on L plates.

To get anything above 125, I either wait 2 years and then do the theory and practical test modules, or pay an insane price, close to £800 in some places, to bypass that and do the theory/practicals in a condensed course.

Thing is, when I get a job I would pay the higher fee to get a 400 or something to start with, but I'd have to travel to England to do it, a 6-8 day course. Maybe I'd fail and it'd be wasted money and time.

Nice bike though, I love naked bikes, almost as much as Enduro bikes.

Pop a wheelie while blasting fools! No wait! Don't do that. Awesome ride, hope you have many good years with it.

Congrats, thats a great and reliable bike you got there. I too like puristic looking bikes that are not covered in plastic :). I'm riding an air-cooled 1000ccm V2 Ducati Monster (since 2004). Its quite similar to yours - a classic looking naked bike.

Cheers bike duder and always keep the wheels pointing towards the road :)

Nice choice. However, I started on a 09 Ninja 250, mainly because parts are ridiculously cheap and it's relatively easy to maintain yourself (which was part of my criteria). I wanted to learn to be my own mechanic and ride a motorcycle. Like MB said, spend the money on good gear ASAP.

I can't wait for the day I can afford a nicer Triumph.

I've been riding since 2008. I started out on sportbikes (a ninja 250 and a gsxr 1000), but I'm currently into classic bikes and cafe racers. Congrats on your new bike, riding is one of the most fun and liberating experiences.

I recently sold my Hyosung Troy and bought a City G4 Kickbike. It's the first time in 9 years that I haven't had a motorized two-wheeler. I miss it, but not that much, and I'm getting back in shape. The kickbike is also faster over short distances in the city in Korea since I can avoid much of the traffic and ignore some traffic laws. Plus I've got an awesome basket now!

I have the endorsement to be able to ride motorcycles, and I really want one, a Yamaha Midnight Warrior specifically, but I need to pay off my Challenger before I can think about affording one. They are very fun to ride though, usually borrow my friends.

I have a bike but i've never ridden it. Stuff happened since i bought it and i basically couldn't ride it. Maybe i'll get back to it eventually.

It's a Yamaha YZF-R15. I believe it's probably similar specs to your bike. Maybe. Never heard of that model number but it does look similar to the bike i learnt to ride on. I'll chalk it up to different region naming.

I've probably heard that piece of advice more than any other. I'm definitely trying to keep in mind that people can look right at me and still not see me. And I've been watching lots of YouTube videos on riding. I feel pretty comfortable, but it's never a bad idea to gather perspective from more experienced riders.

Nice, duder. I love the look of the Ducati Monsters. And yeah, get all of that plastic out of here and show me the engine! Ha.

Wow, the YZF-R15 is a nice bike. So, the 919's full title is CB900F 919. In Europe it's known as the Hornet 900, if that's what you rode.
