Paul George has two first names. Also NBA 2K17 is here.

Well guys, it’s that time of year again. The new NBA 2K game is out(ish), and as one of the game franchises I tend to enjoy the most and put significant amounts of time into, I want to talk about it.

As of Friday, anyone who decided to preorder the game has had access to it before this Tuesday’s official release date. The whole play before everyone else for preordering thing has always seemed a little weird to me, but here I am playing this game I was pretty sure I’d really enjoy several days early, so I guess I can’t complain.

Let’s just get right into it. The MyCareer mode. This is the main attraction for myself and I’d imagine most players. MyCareer is the scene of the crime of last year’s dumpster fire of a story presented by Mr. Spike Lee. That was the worst thing to happen to the mode in… well, ever. Thankfully that particular brand of garbage is left behind for a story with a bit more sanity and some legitimate acting and storytelling. I’m not going to say this is some riveting masterpiece of a story, but it’s leaps and bounds ahead of last year’s attempt. Michael B. Jordan, recently of Creed fame, stars alongside your created player as another player on whichever team you’re drafted to. Apparently one of the writers of Creed contributed to writing this year’s story, and I feel like that pedigree shows. Converging the on and off the court action by creating story characters that you end up running pick and rolls with and dishing assists to is a really good idea it turns out.

The day-to-day grind of the career mode is something I’m enjoying for the most part. I feel like one of the biggest changes is the emphasis on building your player’s skills. Practice is now more prominent than ever. Every day on the calendar now has multiple time slots in which you can take part in different activities, such as hang out with players, go to promotional events, practice, etc. On game days you’re now able to hit the gym pre-game to develop skills. Off days are even more intense, as you seem to always have four different time slots, all with different things to occupy your off-day should you choose to partake. I started off an absolute gym rat, electing to hit the court for some optional practice at every opportunity. It’s made clear early on that this is important for the long term, as it’s the way to earn additional attribute upgrade points, which you will eventually need down the line in order to build a truly elite baller. It can be so time consuming though to jump into the gym at every opportunity, and so now I’m skipping some of that and just making sure to hit the mandatory practices. Coach seems to be satisfied with that.

You’re still managing endorsements, earning a signature shoe line, demanding trades, all that good stuff. A new text messaging feature has also been added in, making conversations with your agent and other story characters lightly interactive, and actually pretty funny. You’ll often get a couple different ways to reply to someone, and it’s kinda great to get a text from your mom criticizing your turnovers last game and simply reply with a nervous face emoji. I haven’t played a whole ton of MyCareer, but it seems heaps better than last year, thankfully. Looking forward to spending some more time livin’ da dream(!) on my way to multiple championships.

I should mention that in terms of gameplay and how things feel this year, I’m happy with the changes. Defense feels a lot more physical for sure, which I’m pretty sure is something the devs were really going for. Steals feel a lot more dynamic. Swiping at the ball can cause it to squirt out in any direction now, and it can turn things into a mad scramble when you poke the ball loose, as opposed to past years when the ball always just poked free of the offensive player’s hands and fell roughly to their feet directly in front of them every time.

The shot meter is probably the other most obvious and meaningful change. It’s now a half circle around the shooter’s feet, and it makes it pretty clear what release timing you’re going for. Though I’m slightly confused about how the shot button (X on Xbox) differs from the pro stick, which is the right analog stick shooting method. When you pull pack the stick to shoot, it not only gives you release timing feedback, but also angle of the stick pull. You can either pull the stick back or push it forward to shoot, but if you push it to the side at all, it gives you an off-angle penalty to the shot and could cause it to miss in the horizontal direction you accidentally pushed. The confusing part is that by using the button there is no feedback on angle, leading me to believe it’s always perfect, but I guess I’m not sure. It’s certainly possible that the button randomizes angle to a degree and the only way to guarantee the best timing and angle is to use the stick. Perhaps someone else knows and can fill me in here.

Overall I’m really enjoying this year’s game. The menus are cleaned up a bit, the action is tighter than ever, and all of the modes seem to have come together the way you’d want them to. Online play has been fine so far, too, which has been far from a guarantee during the launch period of past NBA 2K entries. I guess we’ll see how the servers hold up when everyone else gets access on Tuesday.

So yeah, two thumbs up from me so far. Anyone else preorder and start playing? Eagerly awaiting Tuesday? Either way let's talk about it!

I am a basketball fanatic but I have trouble getting into the NBA 2K series. For the longest time I have avoided buying sports games every year on release day. The reason was that I traded a lot of games when I was younger and did not have a lot money. It pissed me off how little value I got in return for the trades. I only played 2K12, 14 and 16. The couple times I tried MyCareer mode. I modeled the player after myself and came to the conclusion that NBA doesn't have a strong need for 5' 8'' defensive oriented point guards. If you get a lot joy out of the games every year, more power to you.

On a basketball note, do the Indiana Pacers regret trading the draft rights of Kawhi Leonard for George Hill? That Draft Day trade will be talked about for years to come. It is interesting to think about how an NBA player's career path would change if they played for another team.

@zleunamme: Yeah, that stuff is crazy, man. I'm a Blazer fan so my reference point is more Brandon Roy, who was traded to the Blazers on draft day for Randy Foye. No offence to Randy Foye, but that was a total steal. Even with the knee issues and early retirement for Roy, he did more for the team here in Portland than maybe any other Blazer just in terms of being a leader, changing the culture, and turning the team around. LaMarcus Aldridge was also a draft day trade that same year. That's some solid GM-ing.

We also chose Oden over Durant, of course. And Martell Webster over Chris Paul back in the day. Yikes, haha.

Man, I still love the act of playing MyCareer, but the.......... nature of your character in it, year after year is just grating on some level. I get it, dealing with the NBA/NBAPA/Selling to young white people the character has to be the most sterile and safe, but it's hard to see an actual human there. Where is the blaring young thug/future/yachty (the fact that good times is on the sound track but radio edited is hilarious), where is the unique sense of self (saying "I give this steal a presidential pardon" after every reach in foul makes me die inside), where is anything that makes this guy more than what Russell Wilson dreams of in regards to be the Safest Feel Good Brand. The dad stuff is also weird (As somebody that grew up in a house without a father, we never really brought dad up much unless it was an anniversary/was one of the times we actively missed him, when my brother/I got into and graduated school and stuff like that it's not like 'oh man dad would have loved this' I realize others have different experiences, but that felt like THING TO MAKE EMPATHY in the game more than anything), and all the off day/practice stuff continues to be mind numbingly bland at best.

This all being said, when all the college scenes just refer to "the team" and not the school name I busted out laughing.

The MyGM mode has better load times than last year, but a lot of the scripted dialogue in those branching conversations are 100% the same. Playing still feels great and I will dump a good 40-60 hours into it, but it just feels like feature creep is really setting in for me.

Also all the Kobe stuff........ I get it, but............. man sports are so bad god why do I still care about the NBA/College football (when the unpaid labor hits>>>>>>>>>>>>) so much ugh.

This was a lot lol, but it's late and here I am

Haha. You're not wrong about any of that. The stuff where they talk about his dad does seem especially forced and weird, but I think I've missed a lot of that just because I've been playing with the volume on low and listening to podcasts and music as I grind through games. It's definitely one of those games for me. And with most of that on the backburner, it's easy to just play the game and enjoy the mechanics.

Have you ever tried the MyPark stuff? I haven't tried it in 2K17 yet, but I just like that it's basically Playstation Home meets basketball. It's so ridiculous.

I agree with the idea of feature creep, though. If Live can finally get something going it would be great for everyone. Who knows when/if that'll ever happen, though. 2K honestly just needs to build a new engine from scratch at some point because I feel like they've been bolting on to the same base since like 2005. Easier said than done of course when they have a yearly release schedule.

I want to love career mode but the coach ai has always been horrible regarding substitutions. Have they improved that this year at all? Or are you still playing 40-45 minutes a game? That's always been a deal breaker for me. That and not being able to change sliders in my career.

Will definitely get this either way since I love franchise mode but I'll probably wait until I get my ps4 in november and the season is under way.

Tough for me to say, as I'm still early on and coming off the bench. I wouldn't be super surprised to find out that stuff is the same though. A lot of the AI has always been a little suspect, unfortunately. I really hate when the computer will give the ball to a guy and he'll just hold it and no one on either team will move for 90% of the shot clock.

I've got a lot to play so I don't know if I'll be buying this year's game right away, but I will probably end up with this at some point sooner or later.

Is that seriously still an issue? I remember way back in 2K12 I tried playing as a Shooting Guard and I spent my time setting picks and running screens for ~20 seconds while the PG held it, or my other teammates spent time passing it back and forth before taking a buzzer beater shot.

The Michael B. Jordan stuff sounds interesting though, especially with him being on the same team as you. I think one of the years I skipped had a character drafted alongside you but he ended up as a rival on another team. I haven't looked into this year's career mode at all but hopefully it doesn't turn out to be another "you're better than me and I'm jealous of that" story. Especially after last year's Spike Lee thing.

I wasn't going to buy 2k17 until I played The Prelude. Then it pulled me back it. It can't be the shit show that 2k15 was or the shit show that 2k16's story was. Nothing has yet reached the lofty heights of 2k12 though.

I played the prelude and honestly did not like it. You still cant up your offensive awareness, the story in my career is again too intrusive (do they steal your rookie year again?), and the gameplay felt the same again. Again i cant make my iwn damn nick name? And man that skill point store is just the most disgusting thing I've witnessed in a 2k, its literally just buy your way to the top and doesn't even try ti hide it. And the mobile app which was fun for 2k15 has just been completely ruined by 16 and is literally a copy and past for 17 lol. Game face is still terrible too.

I haven't played an NBA 2K game since the Dreamcast, but I'm thinking of picking this one up simply because I'm a huge Hannibal Buress fan. Is he featured a lot in the MyCareer mode?

I am a huge 2K guy. I play 300+ hours of 2K a year so I'm super excited for 17. 16 was a really awesome game. I just am broke but I have stared down the barrel of Steam a few times. I will crack soon and report back.

As far as MyCareer, I'm hoping they changed the skill categories (I believe that has changed for sure), the offense flows better so I don't feel like I have to make a PG to avoid being at the mercy of the AI, and I really hope they allow some of the mode customization stuff in or more options. For example, I think the mode desperately needs a trade veto. I am a huge Celtics fan and last year if you go to the Celtics it's a guarantee they shortly make some awful trade and trade away the players you came there to play with, like Smart and Thomas, and then you're playing with some stud prospect with a dumb name who is a white guy with blonde cornrows and a handlebar mustache. That part just drives me nuts. Being at the mercy of suspect AI is lame and to me really a failing considering how customizable other modes are. Unfortunately it's all about microtransactions I'm sure. They should have a veto at the least if not actually just let you be the GM as well to avoid roster fuck ups.

I played a few positions in MyCareer last year and it's really not an issue like it used to be. It can happen but it's not remotely as bad as it used to be in like 12 when you just had to be a PG. I can still run into enough times where it's annoying to want to be a PG anyways, but I also put in a ton of time as a SF and it was way better. I have seen this years also lets you run two man game stuff with the Michael B Jordan character on your team and I believe even straight up control him for a play so you could do some cool pick and roll stuff and be a big man without feeling as at the mercy of the AI I think. I am going to try it at least and report back.

@artisanbreads: That sounds a bit better. I actually don't know if I even have the patience to do anything other than PG anymore, but I always liked to set the coach to auto call plays, and then trying to follow the playart as best as I can. It was just really frustrating in the past when I'd follow the play perfectly but then the AI would just never shoot until the very end of the shot clock.

The two-man stuff sounds really cool. I think they've had give-and-go passes in the game for a while, but I can't remember if you were able to do stuff like that in the career mode before.

@redyoshi: Yeah you couldn't use that give and go type stuff but that's in there now. I also believe like I said you can straight up control him and I saw you can also direct him to make specific cuts to the basket or to an open area on the floor. Like I said I haven't played yet but I will report back. I'm with you on the issue, it bugs me the same way. That's why I'm basically always a PG. But if this works well I would love to be a PF this year so I'm hoping it does.

Yeah the dynamic between Justice (the Michael B. Jordan character) and yourself is kinda neat. Despite the stupid nickname for the two of you (Orange Juice), you can activate dual player control by working well with each other a few plays in a row. Like if you assist to each other a few times it'll activate and you can use the d-pad to either direct the other player, or hit down to straight up swap between them, which is kinda cool. I feel like it definitely makes playing front court positions a little more viable.

@jjweatherman: I started a MyGM mode....expanding the league by 6 teams and...running all 6 expansion teams( Las Vegas, Vancouver, Kansas City, Baltimore, Jacksonville, & Cincinnati) ...I've lost my damn mind. It took around 4 hours to do the entire off season... I'm already ready to dump about 4 of the teams and I'm only 10 -12 games into the first season

I also started a MyPlayer career and am about to the All-Star break.

The one thing that STILL bugs me is ALL of the waiting around in MyPark... I waited/wondered around for over 25 mins before ever being able to get into 1 game of 3on3 before getting waxed by the team who never missed a single shot.....its ridiculious

Did they change the way you improve your MyCareer player's stats from last year? I mostly played an inside Center on Hall of Fame difficulty and I hated having to invest in midrange shooting just to raise my free throw percentage. I'm also curious as to whether you can now actually hold the ball for longer than 0.5 seconds before it's stripped as a big man, and whether they still cap your stats based on your size/position, leading your stats to be capped at way lower values than comparable real NBA players.

There are a lot of little things that are busted right now, like coach settings resetting to default no matter what you do and player substitutions not taking affect until the dead ball FOLLOWING the timeout rather than when the timeout ends. There are other things I could think of if I were home in front of the game. Never been a MyPlayer type person but I did finally get into Diamond Dynasty (Ultimate Team) on MLB The Show this summer and loved every second of it...unfortunately, MyTeam is an utter mess compared to that mode. Four times as complicated and four times less rewarding.

I expect a lot of the little issues are just things that are waiting for a "day one patch" that'll come out some time this week when the game hits the general public. So far I think this game has the most potential of any iteration since 2K11. It's just a bummer MyTeam is obviously built how the designers intended, and thus will be a considerable train wreck all year long.

the face scan tech is impressive this year. Perfect scans IMO.

@jjweatherman: Good to hear. I appreciate the impressions man.

I think hearing there are some bugs and considering my current finances, I'm going to wait a bit to grab it. But trust me I will and play plenty. I have other games I should get through on my backlog anyways.

As someone who's never played 2k, but is interested in playing this year, where should I start playing? I played the prelude that was released for free and was pretty lost. The tutorial was not great and the career mode didn't provide good feedback. Maybe I should have created a point guard rather than a power foward, so I can have more control?

Yea always start off with a point guard if you never played my career before, you usually have the ball and can call the plays etc. As far as learning the game, i guess just playing a lot and it helps to know a little basketball and i'm sure there are youtube vids out there. I haven't gotten this years game so I can't help out with anything specific to it.

Quick Play isn't a bad place to start. I'd also maybe recommend MyGM, which just lets you choose a team and manage it while playing as many of the games on the schedule as you'd like.

Also, a really good way to learn all of the different moves you can pull off is just to constantly look through the controls menu where it not only tells you how to do everything, but also gives you tips on each category of controls if you tab over. Very helpful when you're trying to figure out how in the heck to throw alley-oops (double tap Y), cross someone up, or pull off a sweet up-and-under post move, for example.
