11 Games I Am Most Looking Forward To In 2010

These are titles that are supposed to ship in 2010 that hopefully remind me why I love games as much as I do.

List items

  • This new RPG from tri – Ace seems quite interesting with its battle mechanics, dressing options, gun customization system, angst – ridden characters etc. The company is known for putting out some excellent stuff in the past but has not always hit the mark with its recent titles (the story in Star Ocean 4 is kind of lackluster and some of the mechanics in Infinite Undiscovery seem questionable at best). Well, the trailers look nice and there is a chance that the game will live up to the hype. Q1 is going to be crowded with titles like Sakura Wars and Final Fantasy XIII so at this point one can only hope that Resonance of Fate shines and will stand out as one of the future classics.

  • Those who have played the Sakura Wars series speak very highly of it but since the venerable Japanese saga has never appeared in English, I haven't gotten an opportunity to experience it. It's great to think that the PlayStation 2 will have another big title coming up in 2010 and the fact that it's one that was kept away from western shores for so long is just icing on the cake.

  • No More Heroes was an amazing game on a console I do not own: the Nintendo Wii. The little I played of it made me think of getting the system just for this title. In the end, I didn't and apparently it wasn't much of a mistake since I get to play this on the Xbox 360 in 2010. Honestly, I can not wait!

  • The first one seemed great as I played it a little and this appears to follow the formula established in a portable form. The turn – based style of combat Valkyria Chronicles sports is extremely engaging and fun to play. Here's hoping that the sequel does no wrong to its older brother.

  • The next game in the series that got me into JRPGs is coming in 2010 and since the Xbox 360 is getting a port, many new fans might appear. Well, that depends on the quality of the game of course. Famitsu gave Final Fantasy XIII a 39/40 by finding only one fault in it: it is way too linear. Japanese gamers are playing it now and have been very critical about the flaw. We'll see for ourselves in March when the title ships.

  • Because of a late release, European gamers will be getting into this fighter in February 2010 while Japanese and US gamers have probably already moved on to other stuff by then. The reviews were mostly really positive and since Arc System Works' Battle Fantasia is quite enjoyable, I am eagerly waiting forward to this release. Besides, this just seems like Guilty Gear in HD with perfect online play. How can one go wrong?

  • Bayonetta is made by the same guys responsible for Devil May Cry, Okami, God Hand etc. The game has gotten rave reviews everywhere and it seems to be one of the must – plays in the first quarter of 2010.

  • An RPG with dating sim elements? Sign me up! This game seems weird and the way the publisher has been promoting it... It looks like even they aren't taking this thing seriously. All in all though, I am a sucker for these types of games and the battle system and the whole dating thing in this one seem interesting and quirky enough to grab my interest. The PS3 version was already released in Europe but I am holding my breath for the Xbox 360 one that may appear later this year.

  • Obsidian is an amazing developer and I find it hard to contain my excitement about their first original property Alpha Protocol. The constant delays and teasers about the game are absolutely maddening which in some crazy inverted way make me even more hyped about the title.

  • This game is my guilty pleasure of 2010. It will probably be awful considering previous racing titles like Sonic Riders and such weren't quite... Well, they were supposedly terrible. I don't know or care about those because who wants to play as Cream the Rabbit or other dumb new Sonic characters anyway? Ryo from Shenmue with a forklift is obviously a totally different story! Word of warning to myself though, it is probably best to wait till reviews start coming in on this one.

  • This game should be higher on the list but since I do not have a PlayStation 3 yet and no funds to procure one now, it has to remain as number eleven – sort of like an honorable mention. I loved the idea and gameplay of the first two and would happily play more of the great and weird series that is struggling to get a solid foothold in western countries. Maybe this one will do better and find new fans ready to pay some money for it. March release date doesn't help it though, to go against Final Fantasy XIII seems like suicide.
