My top 5 games of 2018 and 5 games that took up a lot of my time in 2018

For a number of reasons I didn't really play new releases this year - a lot of them didn't actually interest me and I had a lot of exciting things going on personally.

I still PLAYED a lot of games - a lot of them didn't come out this year though. Here's some that really held my attention for whatever reason:

Chrono Cross: A lot of this game sucks - the combat is boring and easy, the constant bombardment of playable characters is annoying and the story sadly falls short of its potential.

Despite that, I have come to really like Cross. First of all, the music is amazing - go listen to the OST even if you never play the game. The game actually looks good, it hasn't aged horribly like most PS1 games. Cross' story, despite not hitting the mark exactly, is so darn ambitious and crazy that you have to give it props. The concept of the parallel universes, the mid-game twist, the sheer amount of philosophising that the characters do... I just love it. It's a really interesting game and a fulfilling sequel to Chrono Trigger. I like a developer who isn't scared to throw everything on its head and take the fans for a ride that they may not have asked for. Square Enix - never make a Chrono Trigger 3.

Kingdom Hearts series: With 3 coming out I went and played 1 and 2 again on PS4, alongside Re:Chain of Memores. COM sucks, it's boring, overly long and stupid. 1 hasn't aged brilliantly but I still enjoy it. Kingdom hearts 2: Final Mix? That's a damn good game. I'm definitely ready for 3 now.

Street Fighter V Arcade Edition: I still play this game a lot and I still enjoy it a lot. Sue me. Arcade mode sucks ass though, why do people care about it? Whatever, I'll stick to sitting in training mode for 5 hours labbing set-ups that I never even use.

Stellaris: Can I count this game as 2018? Probably not. It kind of sucked when it came out but I got bored one day and bought all the DLCs and you know what? This game is awesome. Creating Libertarian space chickens is some of the most hilarious fun I've had in ages and considering the new DLC is called "Megacorporations" I'm sure I'll have even more fun. That robot DLC is genius.

Now without further ado, my top 5:

List items

  • I can't emphasise enough how good this game is, I'm still stunned. Everything about it ties together in a beautiful JRPG shaped package. A fun story that is COMPREHENSIBLE. Memorable characters. Good soundtrack (as long as you install that orchestral mod). Fun battle system that's seemingly very tuneable. The game is long though but I seriously haven't been bored at all with it. Buy this game!

  • A really fun fighting game that's easy to get into but actually has a surprising amount of depth. Sadly the community hasn't lasted as long as I feel it should have but there are still a core who play.

  • Another great Yakuza game. I play one of these pretty much yearly now - would have bought Kiwami 2 if I had time, sadly I don't.

  • Really fun even if the balancing was a bit rubbish.

  • I'm still pissed off at the character unlocking, it seriously sapped a lot of the hype I had for this. The single player world of light mode sucks the big one as well. The multiplayer is still smash though, so it's still a lot of fun.
