Care to explain how "Windows 8 sucks balls"? And, please, don't say that "the interface sucks, it's meant for tablets", because you can use Windows 8 without using a single Modern app at all. And with Windows 8.1 you can skip directly to the desktop, if spending literally one second on the Start Screen bothers you that much. But, do please explain why your experience with Windows 8 has been so terrible.

Also, MacBook Airs are not "pretty much the best all around laptop by a long shot". Not at all. If you're looking for portability, then sure, they are good. They are ultrabooks and they do exactly what you want them to do: a good compromise between performance and weight. But they are by no means gaming machines, period. If you are not moving around a lot and need to carry your PC around with you all the time, there are far better alternatives, both in terms of performance (both for programs and games) and price.

If you're looking for an ultrabook, the Asus VivoBook S550CA is a pretty good option for your price range, @lordxavierbritish. Ultrabooks don't have (AFAIK) a dedicated GPU, though, so you'll probably have to deal with the Intel HD Graphics on-CPU option, which won't be that good for gaming... They've come a long way since the early days of gaming-capable integrated graphics, for sure, but still, it's not a replacement for a dedicated GPU, and specially with that budget.

I think you are mixing things a bit here. "Free speech" is not absolutely free. Or, at least, it's not free as in "without consequences". Sure, no one can prevent you from actually saying literally anything you want. They can't gag you and stop you from saying, for example, that you love Hitler. But that doesn't mean that what you say will not have consequences because it's protected under "freedom of speech". Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights clearly states that:

1. Everyone shall have the right to hold opinions without interference.

2. Everyone shall have the right to freedom of expression; this right shall include freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, in the form of art, or through any other media of his choice.

Now, in this particular case, 8 years in prison may be a bit too much, and the woman who went against this guy clearly took the "joke" out of context. Trash talking and this kind of attempt at humor are part of the culture of MOBAs and other competitive video games, so you do have to take his words in context to understand that he was not being serious. That doesn't make him any less immature and his "joke" any less stupid, though.

I really like Windows 8, even more so than Windows 7. I'm fine with the shorter release times. I only wish Microsoft would use the Apple approach and integrate releases as "major updates" to their OSes. Make Windows 9 not another full-fledged Windows for those who have 8, but an incremental update you can purchase.
