My top games so far in 2008

1.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of The Patriots
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of The Patriots
Arguably the greatest masterpiece of the Metal Gear franchise and Kojima's best game to date.

The final chapter in Solid Snake's epic story is very unlikely to be topped between now and the end of the year.

2.
Grand Theft Auto IV
Grand Theft Auto IV
As much of a leap forward for the series as GTA III was from the original 2D games.
GTA IV may have displeased some fans with its more realistic direction, but there
can be no argument that it is still an astounding game.

3.
LittleBigPlanet
LittleBigPlanet
In an era where every game seems to be dominated by space marines and violence
LittleBigPlanet has been a breath of fresh air. A gorgeous visual style, great old skool
platforming and its ground-breaking creation tools have made this a must-have for
every PlayStation 3 owner.

4.
Gears of War 2
Gears of War 2
Gears 2 presented a much more refined experience than the first game, while
maintaining everything that was so great first time around.

The campaign is much more enjoyable and the new additions to multiplayer,
especially Horde mode, mean that we're all going to be playing this for months
to come.

5.
Rock Band
Rock Band
Here in the UK, we're yet to see Rock Band 2 released (though it is out later this week).
For now though, we're more than happy to make do with the first game.

There's nothing quite like rocking out with your friends and Rock Band nails this
experience far better than any other game.

Weekly DLC also keeps players coming back for more.

6.
Burnout Paradise
Burnout Paradise
By borrowing Test Drive Unlimited's open-world model Criterion Games revolutionised
the Burnout franchise.

Frantic races, all new events, sublime online play and terrific crashes make it one of
the most adrenline-fuelled racers around. Add to this the copius amounts of free DLC
and you've also got one of the best value-for-money games of 2008.

7.
No More Heroes
No More Heroes
It hasn't been a great year for Wii software, but No More Heroes definitely stood out from
the crowd.

Suda-51's mad style of art and design has never been more obvious than this game, which
follows the story of an otaku who buys a Beam Katana (read: Lightsaber) in an online auction
and sets about becoming the world's greatest assassin, just to get a hot blonde chick into
bed with him.

If that last sentence didn't sell it to you, then I don't know what will!

8.
Mirror's Edge
Mirror's Edge
Battlefield developers Dice took the FPS handbook and tore it up when they set about making
this platformer. A truely unique visual style and incredible controls made for an enthralling
experience once you look beyond the occasional bit of trial and error.

9.
Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2
Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2
The quality of downloadable games on XBLA and the PSN has improved dramatically this year
and Geo Wars 2 is certainly one of the stand-out titles.

No other game this year has a more engrossing "just one more try" effect on your gaming.

10.
FIFA 09
FIFA 09
Comfortably the best football game released for this generation of systems.

I imagine this list will change in the next few weeks, with games the likes of Left 4 Dead, Prince of Persia and Rock Band 2 (in the UK) still to be released.

Pretty good list, and just for the hell of it...

1. Gears of War 2 - I completed this on the weekend with a friend, and it's everything I expected and more. Fucking epic. Dare I say it, I found the story to this to be more emotional then MGS4's. The multiplayer is a big let down though, it's still good, especially with the additional mode horde, but doesn't come near to competing with the first Gears' multiplayer.
2. Metal Gear Solid 4 - Great game, but it's definitely not my favourite MGS. The story was brilliant, but since completing it, I don't have any urge to play it again.
3. FIFA 09 - I'm a football fanatic, and this could of easily come top of my list. I know I'll get more hours and fun out of FIFA 09 then any other game this year, as I already have so far.
4. LittleBigPlanet - At first I was in love with LBP, I still think highly of it now, I've just lost my addiction to it. It's great fun and it's worth coming back to every now and then just to see what new great levels have been created.

Only 4 games have stuck out for me this year (so far).

The fact that you call it soccer is probably why you don't understand.

Good list though, I think I mostly agree (I would shuffle some of them around though .

Samcotts - really? More emotional than MGS4? REALLY? Metal Gear Solid 4 actually made me cry. I get super soppy with movies so maybe it's just me but it was the first game that EVER touched me.

Really. There were two scenes in Gears 2 that really touched me, one more then the other, but both powerful moments. One of which is actually very emotional, and similarly to you, the first time a game that made any sort of impact like that on me.

But, and I haven't played the game so I'm probably being really unfair, from what I've seen of the character design and the snippets of dialogue I've heard... how is that possible? I thought the characters were a bunch of bulky jocks doing their best Christian Bale impression. Oh snap! I feel all ignorant now.

My favourites (in no order) this year are: MGS4, LBP, GTA4, Burnout Paradise and Mirrors Edge.

I found Gears of War 2 to be emotional as well, but I actually didn't cry, though I was on the brink of doing so at one point. I did cry a bunch of times in MGS4, though, I think it was moreso because Metal Gear has always been a franchise that really connected you to even the obscure characters. In Gears 2, we only knew one side of that particular moment, because we did not have much background information on the other person. The same situation in a game like MGS would tell us more about both of the characters, not just one, and I think would produce a more emotional effect just by that reason.

I cried like a baby for most of the final few hours of MGS4. Never felt an emotional connection with any of the Gears characters though. Not even for a second.

I really can't see how anyone can become emotionally attatched to any character that's packing 30 stone of pure muscle and who's few lines are "fuck yeah!" and "eat shit and die!".

As a more on topic point, I'd say that's a pretty awesome list. From the three or four hours of LBP I've played I can see it's really awesome. Having played Garry's Mod for so many years it doesn't really seem as exciting to me as it might to someone who's never come across a real 'sandbox', but it's cuteness and appeal is undeniable.

I can't wait for Mirror's Edge, I'm just gonna buy a controller and wait until its January PC release, as my standard-definition TVfor my 360 isn't really cutting it these days and I want to experience the unique art style in all its glory.

Oh yeah, and ParanoidFreak needs to understand that there are people in the world who arn't American, and who might have different likes, dislikes and views to Americans.

I've never really become attached to any video game characters but that's probably just me. Apparently, people cried at the ending of MGS 3 but I thought it was just an alright ending, didn't really feel anything for the characters though.

Back to the topic though, my favourite game of 2008 is GTA IV and even though I haven't completed it, the more realistic approach Rockstar has taken has really payed off.

I only really liked GTA's online freemode stuff. That was so mint.

I didn't even know what was going on at the end of MGS3 - I think it's the most confusing MGS.
