I feel like it has been overstated that Darksiders is a derivative mash-up of numerous video game classics, and understated that it is ultimately a really great action adventure game, and likely a classic in it's own right.

The single-player component of Wings of Liberty didn't really bring anything new to the table for the RTS genre. But the incredibly balanced multi-player is as good as it ever was in 1998, and better.

Costume Quest is not a very challenging game, but its throwback RPG gameplay, charming setting, and excellent writing made it one of my favorites this year.

Super Meat Boy borders on a sadistic level of difficulty, requiring a level of twitchy muscle response that's rare in today's games. The cover art pretty much describes it perfectly; I'm getting the crap beat out of me, but somehow I'm still smiling.

The understated, stark design of both Limbo's visuals and sound track were really surprising and added to the game's wonderfully. The games-as-art debate aside, this is one of the best "indie" games I've ever played.

I see the release date of October 2009 perfectly well, but I've put more hours into this than any other game in 2010. That fact and the excellent DLC released this year, let Borderlands jump into this list.

Diablo's crack-like "gameplay" with the sense of humor from a Monkey Island game? Yep.
