GOTY 2012

You know the drill.

Ports and HD upgrades are exempt from the list. Otherwise both Zone of the Enders HD Collection and Persona 4 Golden would be high on the list. X-Com is on the list because it's a substantial remake.

List items

  • 110+ hours well spent.

  • Outside of some dumb character designs, this is an improvement over the original in every way. Fantastic all the way through.

  • This game is intense and stressful, in all the right ways.

  • By the point I was burning a field of marijuana with a flamethrower while my character was shouting "Holy fuck this is awesome!", I knew this game would be high on the list.

  • I came mostly as a Persona fan and not a fighting game fan, but I've still had a lot of fun playing it. This has me even more excited for Persona 5.

  • Easily the biggest surprise of the year for me. Previously having little interest in either the comics or TV show, I wasn't sure how much I would like it, but it had me hooked on it pretty quickly.

  • Whatever flaws this game has are outweighed by the joy of climbing onto a chimera and hacking it to bits.

  • I do not know why I liked this game.

But I do know that I liked it.

  • Controls are awkward, but the core game is a lot of fun. I kind of wish more of the game were the flying segments, but I still loved playing this.

  • It's too random at times, but I was still drawn in by this game, even after dying to that goddamn flagship.

  • This game won't have the same impact on me as Diablo 2 did, but I still got addicted to hell with it.

  • A solid experience that does Halo right, even if it doesn't really do much new.

  • Even as a less dedicated fan of the series, I enjoyed this a lot.

  • An improvement over the first game, but it still has problems.

  • This game was kind of cool I guess.

  • I liked the ideas behind this game, but ultimately the execution was too flawed for it to be anything special.

  • I might have enjoyed this more if I didn't get so easily frustrated with stealth games.

  • As somebody who liked XIII I felt like this was basically a big step sideways. Lots of changes, but the net result of this game is neither significantly better nor worse than the original.

  • I guess I just don't like stealth all that much, because this left me feeling flat.

  • I found this game strangely uninteresting.

  • It's been a long time since I played a game where my opinion of a game dropped as sharply as it did for this game as I got towards the end. There's so much filler and the combat gets so broken and easy that it's basically pointless. It's worth a shot if you like the genre, but it's still pretty flawed.
