I absolutely loved abbys energy and as someone who only waited a year and a half to move on to better pastures from their first job i think you're in a much better position than i was with having that hashtag personal brand. I think you are gonna do amazing things and wanna see you direct more gaming content with your experience in giant bomb~

also the six crazy frights intro is hands down the best content ever made and i love you more for it

@fontelroy: The game needs a much better tutorial on the sound system and controls, it's fun to figure out the actual mechanics beyond that but this game being early access makes the first hour or so of the game really hard to break into

@windir2112: The issue with games like this is there's a lot of good "game" to it that makes it hard to just reject whole cloth. Look at overwatch, all a gacha game is from the east is overwatch lootboxes for different mechanics and some of them have the free to play wait/energy system in it too.

I wish all this crazy monetization stopped and became less predatory but Impact is not where we boycott an end to it all

@landhawk: Very much in line with how I feel about this shit right now. If anyone is disappointed, they should see how many people that we'd think would in the know about this to still be following merrit. It's clear that this instance involves something obscure and the reality is that it's a problem of our culture in general that it stayed that way. I don't know what is "in the weeds" and what isn't for this kind of shit, but it's clear that this is a larger issue in general.

And yeah, at the same time there's a lot of jack offs in this thread that just want to use this to also express issue with the issue around matt in prior giant bomb episodes. It comes off as "i didn't have any problem with matt and it sounds like you guys are getting your chickens to roost this time lul"

It's annoying and condescending to people who truly care about make spaces safe, which is a hard fucking endeavor. This isn't a "literal google search solves this" issue because one of the ways people research this is check out how many people you'd think would have called this shit out are silent. There isn't a litany of stories, or anyone being signal boosted by people who I'd have expected to comment on this shit.

This isn't excusing merrit. Even though i have chagrin with how people are saying to unilaterally do better as if this issue isn't both multi faceted and obscure, a lot of games press has to do better with this stuff.

That being said, I don't think I've seen any forum or media circle really consistently handle their shit in this regard yet so it's a frontier that we're all traversing and learning from

If I ever suspected that gaming would ever take such a dark turn that Brad would just be sitting there listening to a baby cry on his controller IN THE MIDDLE OF GAMEPLAY (59:20) I think I would have taken up soap whittling

BL3 sure seems like it is made with the core audience in mind. The fact that it doesn't change too much or bring in more current trends is a part of the appeal that they're consciously going for, and that'll either work for you or it won't. Not surprised that that's a more divisive approach. But it seems to be doing well for them if you believe Pitchford's claim of the game doing better at launch than BL2 did at its peak. I don't have a take on the game itself yet, but I think their approach is valid and even a little refreshing in today's GaaS dominated climate.

I think there is very much a way to cater to a core audience while no simply iterating the way bl3 did. Each game does it but to an extent that really allows the trappings of it to go overlooked. Do we really need unskippable cutscenes and such a kingdom hearts level intro to each game? Do we really need to neglect vehicular travel and useful map waypoints?

The list goes on and it is simply bad for the sake of being the same

Was pretty excited to hear what they all thought of BL3 especially since it feels like it's aping Destiny a bit more. Disappointing to hear it didn't seem to work for most of the staff. Besides the writing not be great (which it's never been) I feel like the game is a huge improvement. Guns are actually unique from one another, exploration is actually rewarded, and the 4 classes are all alot of fun.

Jeff not thinking Moze has good skills may be in for a treat with since she has basically an infinite ammo build and seems to get really good later in the game.

The complaints about diversity in planets was a bit strange considering this handled exactly like Destiny's planets. Different strokes I guess.

I love destiny but it being the bar that all looter games are supposed to clear is strange. I much prefer the way Borderlands handles things but different strokes I guess.

I felt bad for Jeff about the moze build he decided to go with, it's definitely the shield skill tree. It's a failing of the game that they still have extremely uninteresting and unimpactful trees like that shield one, and I definitely prefer the unlimited ammo tree

@lonelyspacepanda: I think it's disingenuous to think that their sourness is unfair, it's okay that they dislike it and the ammo issue is absolutely relevant, I picked mozes unlimited mags class to specifically ignore a series long issue. It might not bother you, but it's absolutely there.

And more "honest"? I think that, again, we're not giving credit to sincere impressions here. Many of jeff's gripes, especially his issue of not finding the right character and being too far in to retread, is absolutely valid. They did admit the shooting and gunplay felt fun but the variety of guns vs the sort of archetypes that are becoming more well defined in gun manufacturers is absolutely true. It makes it feel like the millions of guns possible are too well split off into categories and the feel of new guns, at least until you get into the late game I suspect, is very much "20 different kinds of guns with a million different stats"

And I LOVED bl2, but that's because of gaige the mechromancer. One of my main gripes about the series is that they create really cool builds that become it's own "class" but these unique ones never carry over. the main pet, turret/gunner, stealth, and siren archetypes are absolutely there. But the kreigs, the claptraps, the Nishas, and so on are never going to come back. So it sucks for you if you found a class in a previous game you loved TOO much. Worse yet, most people just say "go play bl2 then" when that's absolutely not the sort of response you can even make when borderlands is a series based on "more of the same but with some improvements" and the main 4 still have similar identities - albeit expanded and refined each installment
