January: Sega announces that production of the Dreamcast will cease in March and it will be their final console. They will begin a new era of third party development.
November: Leading the launch of Microsoft's first console was a storied title named Halo. It turned out to be one of the most important games of the decade. Not only for establishing the de facto guideline for console FPS design and displaying the genre's ability on consoles, but for also legitimizing the Xbox's place in the console race. The 00s would have been a very different era for video games without Halo.
December: In Japan Sonic Adventure 2 Battle is released, marking the first time Sega's mascot appeared on a Nintendo console. The fierce 90s rivalry had come to end, and the winner was clear.
