The basic principle of these games is that the joints can rotate freely, you need triangles to fix all the arms in place. Like those magnetic balls-and-sticks building toys.
Other than "lots of enemies" and being from Japan this doesn't have much in common with Dynasty Warriors. In DW you have those swarms of harmless enemies (even at high difficulties they rarely attack) that you only kill to get counters or bars moving and the central aspect is the strategic situation where you have to conquer locations and engage elites in duels. In EDF you just have to survive but those swarms are anything but harmless, especially on higher difficulties you die very quickly if you get overrun by a bunch of basic ants. Crowd control isn't for scores or meters but for sheer survival. It's more like a twin stick shooter in that regard.
Also the new bipedal enemies are nasty unless you're super overleveled.
The Dragon's Trap is one of my all time favorite games, and I came into Monster Boy a bit cautious as I was afraid they were going to screw it up. They totally won me over. As a sequel (or maybe prequel... but boy does that imply some things about this game and world if you end up working at a weapons shop as the pig for Wonder Boy III) this game hits all the right buttons for me. The remixed versions of the Wonder Boy III songs are instantly nostalgic, and getting this a year after the Dragon's Trap remake is like a freaking gift. Loving every minute of this.
Gotta be a sequel, the church has stained glass windows of all the previous protagonists of the series.
