So a bit of backstory to start with: I played Destiny's demo period to level 7, absolutely could not STAND the glacial pace of the games progression, but I thought that just about everything else was interesting. The combat was a blast, the music and visuals are gorgeous, and your actual abilities were perfect for the kind of game they were making. But, on the whole I decided not to buy it. As the DLC piled up and then The Taken King was announced at 40 dollars, I never thought I'd actually pick up the game. And then the Legendary Edition came out with everything for 60, and I thought that this was the perfect time with the new 2.0 system to give it a show.
First things first, MAN does this game level you out fast now. I started the game late-ish yesterday with my level 7 character, and I managed to hit level 18 before I went to bed. Gone are the endless days trolling through the patrol missions trying to get to the next level or two so you can do the next story mission. It also helps that the House of Wolves and The Dark Below have been adjusted so they can be done by low level characters, making it easy to just keep doing story missions and maybe the strikes as they appear. I haven't done a single patrol this entire time, and THANK GOD for that.
And also THE ENGRAMS! DEAR GOD THE ENGRAMS! SO MANY ENGRAMS! I am constantly finding green and even several blue engrams where before I could barely find a white. I actually wondered at first if it was because of my level, but the more I hear talk about how the loot system has changed, the more I think that it would have been just as much of a slog to get from 7 to 18 without the new system.
Overall, Brad was right, I feel like Destiny has gone through the same evolution that Diablo III did, right down to the changes in loot drops being more prevalent, and with those changes made and the game much more streamlined, I feel like it is a much more enjoyable experience in the long run.
We'll see if the game can keep up this kind of place as I near 20 and 25 and start hopefully finding legendary engrams. Fingers are crossed.
