Sherlock Holmes games

This is a list of the Sherlock Holmes games made by Frogwares ranked from best to worst. I've chosen not to include the Hidden Object Games (like Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles) because those are a completely different type of games.

I've really gotten into Sherlock Holmes games since playing the newest one, The Testament of Sherlock Holmes. They all have their quibbles but you'll probably like them if you enjoy British gentlemen being very British.

There is also a new one coming out called Crimes and Punishments!

List items

  • Last game in the series, feels and looks like a modern adventure game. The graphics are a big leap from the previous games and the menus don't look like they're from the nineties anymore. If you fuck up puzzles enough times, the game will let you skip them. There is a button which shows all hotspots on the screen. You can switch from a third person behind the shoulders perspective to first person perspective to a classical point and click adventure third person perspective. This game is very accessible for new players. The only negative point is that there some unresolved plot points and weird story contrivances in this game.

  • Fifth game in the series and second game to have a cat and mouse style plot (first one being SH: Nemesis). Good game but I wouldn't recommend it to start with. The subject matter is about Jack The Ripper which is great but the game also feels trapped by it. There is a lot of backtracking in this one, which made it feel like a big fetch quest sometimes. It has a button to show you all the hotspots and a way to switch between first and third person perspective but no ingame hints system. There were a couple of puzzles that were frustratingly difficult, even with a guide, but those were few and far between. Most puzzles are quite logical and not too hard.

  • Third game in the series but got remastered in 2010. It added an ingame hints system, a button to let you see all hotspots, a way to switch from third person to first person perspective... This is the game that put the developer Frogwares on the map. The puzzles can be quite pixelhuntlike and a bit frustrating but not as bad as the next game on the list. You sometimes have to type in answers and without using the hints system, it can be quite hard. Some people consider this to be the best game in the series. That probably has to do with the theme and story which is absolutely fantastic (cthulhu!).

  • Fourth game in the series, first one to have a cat and mouse style plot. The good thing is that the game also got remastered in 2010 and added an ingame hints system, ability to switch between first and third person perspective and a button to show all the hotspots. The bad thing is... the puzzles were infuriatingly hard. You sometimes have to type in the answer you think is correct, sometimes you needed to x amount of things before something completely unrelated would happen. There is also a lot of backtracking. I think you'll enjoy this one if you really like to take it slow and re-read things a lot without the game helping you at all. You can use the ingame hints system of course but at some point I was completely relying on it because I didn't know what I was doing anymore.

  • Second game in the series. It's played in third person perspective. Too rough to be enjoyed nowadays. It might be worth it if you're into classic point and click adventure games.

  • First game in the series (later re-released for nintendo DS). Too rough to be enjoyed nowadays. I haven't played the version on the Nintendo DS
