Depending on your level you'll have different groups of enemies attack you when you get in there.
After you kill those robots you go into a room with a computer and find out that it was an experiment to see if people would keep sacrificing themselves for the greater good, or would refuse to sacrifice themselves and end the experiment (leading to a successful test by Vault-Tec to test man's ability to reject communal attachments). After the experiment is over the Vault doors are opened and all Vault residents are allowed to leave. (With permission by the overseer if needed). You also learn the fate of the other vault dwellers and that the Vault residents sacrificed themselves until there were only 5 members left.
Since all the Vault residents died and there was no successful recolonization the experiment was ultimately considered a failure.
The 5 members couldn't deal with the fact that they sacrificed all the people they knew for little to no reason and the guilt caused them to create a suicide pact. They took turns shooting one another (or the final person in question shot the other four) until the final participant dropped the gun and fled without committing suicide.
