@KingWilly: you forget those games are made by mostly different teams. valve, like ea, have modular organization model. teams are separated. one programmer team and seperate dev teams per project. what is original half life 2 staff doing for three years? they had nothing to do with portal 1 but support. writers, art, everybody was brought new for the project...
@KingWilly: thats what I was wondering. I got sick of softporn in blockbuster movies. still dont know why I even watch them. oh that stubborn geek in me. And then it hit me, because of the way stories are told in games and their dependence on characters, sex by default should have more meaning in games. Right? anyone?
no seriously. cooking lessons? papercraft? calligraphy? duck tape art? geocaching?
it took 18 months to make uncharted 2: among thieves. episode 2 was like 3 years ago. its a 5 hour episode... its not even a full game. they still use the same engine. ok slightly updated. but c'mon... my money is on gabe cancelling whole thing. just like with half life 1. complete do over.
@dubios451: thing is modern movies just like music videos are more and more like porn. can sex in games actually contribute to the story and be more meaningful then in a movie? all animation problem aside.
Sex belongs in games more then it belongs in movies. In movies sex often carries no emotional weight. It is there more to sell actors. It is there because everybody expect it. Just after middle part as much needed break before big explosive finale. So in most cases it's tied with pacing of the movie.
Because player dictates pacing in games game stories are broken in small pieces and tied to places or characters . In best case scenario sex in games is connected with a place to designate peaceful or friendly location (The Witcher) or as a ridiculous mini game, silly feature... (duke nukem , God of War, GTA, even Mass Effect as little bigger dialog puzzle). So it is always a place. For me that's missed opportunity to connect with the character, in some other way, and deepen the relationship. Sex in games done right simply starts more questions then in movies. Where is taken for granted just like the world the same movies create.
Let's take one simple example. Half Life 2. Alyx and Freeman. If Half Life 2 was a movie they would probably do it when they enter Black Mesa East. Just after meeting with her father. She is so happy she drags freeman to small room and grabs the wrench. Thanks to her engineering skills she takes the hev suit off. Freeman (starred by edward norton ) then takes her standing in typical "suspended congress" kamasutra position holding Alyx ( starred by Zoe Saldana ) ass with black gloves. (For some reason gloves and socks stay on at all times).
It would make sense in movie, but in the game? Stupid and meaningless? Or more importantly Jessica Alba as Alyx? Are you more interested in relationship between those two characters or Alyx ass? Are we human? Or are we wankers?
its weird how halo is so low on the list considering some "objective" journalist already called it game of the year, best selling game of the year and most anticipated game of the year. and all that was "well known" in January . before real in game videos.
Guy is right on one thing. usually when company gets bought everybody is full of crap; how they are all delighted and other kiss ass stuff but not this time. like man said, its fraking Square-Enix bitches. It is awesome they are working with them...
