These discussions are like the blind leading the blind. The end results make no damn sense unless you actually listen to how hard they are selling a game which only one or two of them has played.
When the discussion about Elite Dangerous broke out the guys are actually talking about Elite Dangerous: Horizons which is a "sequel" to Elite Dangerous (which they now call Elite Dangerous Season 1 for SOME reason). It's a stand alone expansion that's in Early Access and is a full priced 60 dollar game.
The developers have virtually abandoned the original Elite Dangerous and just went full money grab mode by slapping a 60 dollar tag to all of the features they promised when they kickstarted Elite Dangerous. If you already own Elite dangerous, Horizons is absolutely not worth buying.
