Posted this on the thread for the podcast but I thought I would explain why this basic premise (a Cold War over REEs) is still very much in the realm of fantasy.

See the thing is rare earth elements (REE) are not actually super rare nor are they found almost exclusively in China. In fact almost all of them are fairly common with cesium being about as common as copper. What has been happening recently and the news stories that Jeff referred to is that China has in recent years changed their policy on exportation of REEs. Specifically they have reduced export quotas with the reason of environmental and scarcity concerns. See the thing is since the 90s until around now China has been pretty much the sole producer of REEs meaning that there was little incentive to develop and operate mining facilities in other areas of the world because people could just buy it cheaply from China. (specifically Inner Mongolia)

In the past few years China has decided that instead of just being a raw materials exporter (with respect to REEs) it wanted to get into the business of producing goods using the resources. (rare earth magnets, lasers, aerospace parts, batteries, metal alloys, highly refractive glass, etc.) So as a result it's limiting the materials it exports but not the actual goods using those materials. Other nations don't really care for that because it drives up the price of manufacturing those goods due to less supply with the materials.

However, it's not the true gloom and doom Jeff makes it to be seeing as I said earlier most of these elements are actually quite abundant. It will take time to get production back up in the mines that were producing the elements before China became the main supplier and develop new mining sites but it's not some big shock looming on the horizon. It's likely that what will happen is there will be a supply constraint for a couple years in the future while production in other parts of the world (namely Australia, Brazil, Canada, Greenland, United States and South Africa) is developed. Ya it will be pretty tense for a bit but in the long term China's move to limit RRE exports is not truly frightening and is actually a positive as it means that the supply chain for REEs will be diversified and therefore more stable.

It's an interesting premise for a near future war game but it's far from really being the truth and is mostly dependent on the assumption that other non-Chinese mining firms and start-ups won't exploit other sources in various parts of the world or restart production on layed up mines in the face of higher prices for the commodities due to less supply. Frankly that is extremely unlikely, very short sighted and somewhat ignorant.

In reality the trademark should go to Dota Allstars LLC. (Pendragon and co.) Although Blizzard has a much more legitimate claim to it than Valve.

Especially seeing as IceFrog was not a principal creator of Dota or Dota Allstars, he was just the main guy left with it's caretaking when the main creators went off to work on different projects. Such as LoL.

Siliconera has reported that this game will unfortunately be delayed to an unknown date due to Vanillaware concentrating their resources on finishing Dragon's Crown first before doing their side of the localisation process. (programming and such)

XSEED itself is in the dark and doesn't know when they'll start working on it. So it looks like it will be a while before we see this game come to North America. :(

So I didn't realize there was a mechanic at play with the crystarium, about how you should only level Rav/Com on the big nodes, and the other classes on the small... something about min/maxing... well I didn't do ANY of that.

... What? When the hell does it say anything about the nodes making any difference?

It in all honesty it just seems to be random what I get when I level something up. I can get great stat increases from a tiny node sometimes and then other times I get fuck all. Does it ever actually say and did I just miss it?

They talk about that briefly in the tutorial and they also talk about it in the instruction manual. Specifically that you'll get a bonus depending on what role you level on the big crystals.

It sounds like something Vanille would say so it feels very out of character. Maybe Serah shouldn't have been the protagonist. And Noel's posture reminds me of Agent York. Ha! Ha!

It's a joke. In some of the Live Triggers (dialog choices) they'll have one answer that obviously looks like a joke compared to the others. The other three choices she speaks normally and will either tell Noel that Snow is her fiancé and the only one to believe her that Lightning is missing, or that he's her hero and along with Lightning saved her from her fate as a crystal, or that he's the most important person in her life and elaborating a bit on the previous two.

The fourth choice, which I displayed is just a fun joke since unlike in XIII they've added back some of the little jokey side moments that would happen in other Final Fantasy games. Hence the reason it sounds out of character is because it's a joke. I found it to be a funny little scene and it's not like that was a story critical moment or anything.

Funny little scene I found around 2 hours in to Final Fantasy XIII-2 where during a Live Trigger with Noel, you can choose to have Serah describe Snow in extreme detail.

Finished the demo as well and dug the monster stuff, it's cool that they have their own Crystarium, which is leveled by items. Although I will say I'm unsure about the change to the crystarium mostly because they didn't really talk about it and I'm curious if it ends up branching out like in XIII or if there is a set cap for Noel and Serah's Crystarium like there seems to be for the monsters you capture. If so than that's pretty neat as well that you really do have to pick and choose how you want to develop your character instead of just making it tedious to do so by making the cost much higher for the character's non-main roles.

I also think it's interesting how you get a bonus when you level the crystarium enough, which can be a tough choice when it comes down to picking another ATB gauge slot or another role. Adds even more customization to the character's if it ends up that the crystarium has a definite limit and you can't just grind out everything if you so wish.

The change to how accessories works is intriguing as well in that you have to really decide what to equip since each item has an equipment cost so you have to pick and choose what you want to wear or increase the capacity you have for equipment.

Getting gil after battle is nice as well since I wasn't as big of a fan of having to sell items (mostly components) for gil so that I can buy new stuff (mostly components and catalysts) to upgrade my weapons with and it sounds like crafting will require quite a bit of gil.

I like how the Mog clock and preemptive strikes work specifically that you don't have to sneak up on an enemy merely intiate combat early enough and doing so gives you a buff along with the chain bonus increase.

The other change to combat of having a more fighting game style health system was very interesting as well and adds more strategy and urgency to finishing a battle since every time you are wounded your max health for that battle (until you die and are revived) decreases by how much you were wounded for so you can't recover all the damage the character took. Meaning if fights drag on you can be weakened fairly quickly. Not to mention the added incentive of a greater chance of item drops tied to getting a 5/5 in the battle (meaning complete it fast)

I'm guessing this is early on in the game and it's cool how you already get optional sidequests that early.

The puzzle inside the anomoly was neat and I'm curious if it's optional or not since it seemed you could just go and fight Atlus without doing it if you so wanted.

Chocolina (the strange time travelling merchant dressed as sexy chocobo) seems pretty ridiculous though but in a kind of funny way.

Oh and the level had all kinds of nooks and crannies to explore around in, which was intriguing and with some branching paths around the area like the place where an optional Cie'th mark and the machine that brings you in to the anomoly are.

Also I will agree that Mog's voice is kind of annoying.

Anyway I'm quite enjoyed the demo and looking forward to playing this when it comes out. (time permitting)
