Protagonists Whose Name Is Basically Ryu

Japan. We've all heard of it. It turns out they make video games and exactly 85% of these video games have a protagonist whose name is essentially 'Ryu'. This is the definitive list of these protagonists.

List items

  • The definitive Ryu.

  • Hates sailors and thugs.

  • A ninja Ryu.

  • Called "The Dragon of Dojima" for his famous dragon punch (probably), which is a classic Ryu move.

  • One of the only Ryu's to become a medical doctor. This guy will train your brain as well as punching waterfalls (presumably).

  • Alright so his name might not actually be "Ryu" but in Japan he goes by Ryuichi Naruhodo and that's good enough for me.

  • Look at those last two letters. They spell "Ru", pronounced "Roo" which - as all Japanese game experts will tell you - is the correct way to pronounce "Ryu."

  • A female Ryu. Her sword is kind of like a pair of scissors which isn't really relevant but seems cool enough to mention, and when she activates her not-Devil Trigger power her she loses most of her clothes, which is very similar to the Satsui No Hado.

  • This guy is such a good cheerleader that he can inspire people to deflect meteors and discipline ill-behaved cats. Classic Ryu behaviour.

  • On the face of it "Liu" might not seem a lot like "Ryu", but "Liu" is actually incredibly close to the "Ree-you" pronounciation which - although incorrect - is still popular enough that it forces our hand. As such, we have to allow for Liu's on this list.

  • The other Ninja Ryu. His name is less similar to "Ryu" than the guy from Ninja Gaiden but only because he pretends his first name is "Strider"

  • Kind of splits the protagonist burden of KoF with Kyo, who also definitely counts.

  • I've never played Breath of Fire but this guy is definitely a Ryu so he's in.

  • Look, his name is basically "Ryo" which in turn is basically "Ryu."

  • Scholars have debated what the English equivalent of "Ryu" is for centuries. However, in order to keep this list pure we must avoid this discussion entirely and focus instead on names which basically sound like "Ryu". In that vein, this dude called Ryan from a game I haven't played makes it in.

  • Full disclosure, this guy looks about as generic as Ryu's come and I have no idea who he is. But he's a main character whose name is basically "Ryu" so by god he's on the list.

  • A Ryu who pilots big robots which may or may not punch things.

  • This guy looks like he has a blade shield? Ryu's don't normally use shields but he also has a headband, which is a staple of the Ryu wardrobe and cancels the shield out.
