Best games of 2012

List items

  • Firaxis has done it again. Civ V was my favorite game of 2010, and somehow I had waaaay more fun with Xcom. Great turn based combat and an engrossing meta game where you are going to make bad moves... no matter what.

  • I knew it was going to be a good year when a game I had never heard of traps me for 30 hours in the first 2 weeks. Then I took a break, and came back to put in another 30 hours. This is a classic style dungeon crawler with some great puzzles. Maybe I'll load this back up and experience some of the mods and added dungeons.

  • Art... beautiful art. I played this game with 2 friends watching over my shoulder. One sitting, 6 hours, and all of us in aw of the deep and beautiful tale ThatGameCompany has given us.

  • Seriously, Dat Soundtrack. I still listen to it all the time. I want a drive style movie based off of a dilusional hitman in an animal mask who goes to drug dens and mob headquarters to clean the entire place out.

  • A game I hated to play just as much as I loved it. The walking dead forces you into so many lose lose situations, and characters you really enjoy and care for are going to die in horrible ways, and the game will make it feel like it is your fault.

  • I have a love hate relationship with rouguelikes, but FTL is one where I invest an hour into an epic space journey, only to be obliterated by a cheap pirate warship, and then immediately boot up another ship to try again.

  • The last hurrah from the Wii. With so few JRPGs, and even less of them being of any quality, it feels good for a game to remind me of so many things I looked in the PS1 Final Fantasy games.

  • I love point and click adventures, and this old school style paired with new school storytelling and some really challenging puzzles entertained me for a good 2 weeks.

  • Best Ninja game since Tenchu, oh yeah. I felt like a badass playing this game.

  • Another rouguelike, and this one is insane. Take control of an animal (from deer to lions to pomeranians) in post apocalyptic Tokyo to survive as long as you can. It is so much fun.

  • Probably my most disappointing game. I felt the same way about Borderlands 1 until I played through it in coop mode. Maybe I just need some friends to step up and pick up the game.

  • Great survival horror game a la Silent Hill. The 2D artstyle allows for some strange jump scares.
