GOTY 2012

My 2012 game of the year list. This was surprisingly difficult to make.

List items

  • This is a damn good game. Hard, replayable, decent attempt at a storyline, and the art-style and music just scream tension. This game has provoked the most tension in me this whole year, and given that it is a turn-based game, that is saying something.

  • If you've played this game, you know why it's here. If you haven't, go play it.

  • Goodness Gracious, that SOUNDTRACK. That action. That Artstyle. For 10 dollars.

  • Not the best game, but I put it at number three because of how much fun I had playing this game with my Brother. If you don't have siblings, I can understand why you would rank Borderlands 2 much lower or even hate the game. But I have a brother, and this game has generated fun times for the both of us.

  • Yes, the ending sucked. Yes, it wasn't as good as Mass Effect 2. But there were moments in Mass Effect 3 that had me almost jumping for joy and there were moments which genuinely made me feel sorrow. It's a good game. A very good game.

  • Not a Max Payne game - but it's still great. Essentially it's Man-On-Fire-The-Video-Game. But what's wrong with that? That sounds like the greatest game ever made! It's not perfect, and fans are definitely entitled to despise the new direction that Rockstar has taken with Max, but for me, it was great.

  • I hated Far Cry 2. I mean I really hated it. It's almost as if Far Cry 3 psychically read my mind and decided "hey, you know what Korolev? I agree. That is why I am going to NOT suck in exactly the ways Far Cry 2 did suck". The result is a game that addressed virtually every complain that I had with Far Cry 2. This game is fun, beautiful and lasts quite a while. And that freaking Map Editor is amazing.

  • Phil Fish might be (or definitely is) a pretentious hipster, but he made a good game. Fez has a wonderful artstyle, good music, and a hell of a lot of content. It makes you think. It really does.

  • Known as Fallblox in Aussieland, this game is hard, hard, hard. But good, because it lasts a long time and gives your brain a good workout.

  • I was debating on whether or not to put this on here. Then I reminded myself that I played it for over 100+ hours, so it must have done something right. I stopped playing this game about 2 months ago, and I doubt I'll ever play it again, but it's a good game, even if it went in design directions I disliked.
