GOTY 2012

Games that stood out in a positive way from the year 2012.

List items

  • Just love the core conceit of this game so much, it has to be on here. The level of character management they grant you is amazing, connects you to the characters and their plights almost immediately. Really intelligently designed game that I plan to play more thoroughly.

UPDATE: Finished a playthrough with Andrus...this game is truly extraordinary and most certainly worth time and money.

  • Touched upon many things I like (violent films, mostly) and showcased what a small team of internet collaborators can do in its soundtrack and presentation. Played it through many times, love its core gameplay so much, willing to overlook the terrible boss battles and somewhat unsatisfactory story.

  • Gameplay variety is something a lot of big developers never tap into, but this bizarre little flash game manages to touch on several different genres in about an hour, and makes for a very funny little adventure I didn't expect. The surprise of it definitely was a big part of it, but I think it has some smart ideas in there that could be applied elsewhere.

  • The game that really spelled out the possibilities roguelikes bring to the table. Just wish I could find co-op partners that aren't impatient jerks.

  • Pure gameplay and very easy to get lost in for minutes at a time. Just hitting that rush, over and over and over. I've only ever beaten the first two stages on both the iPhone and PC but I want to do better. Great music, simple in the best way concept and got a nice clean look. I dig it.

  • Curious, sad little game that made me think about the pacing of a relatively simple game and sneaking narrative into the periphery just enough to where you care about a monotonous task enough to keep on doing it. Just a clever little game with a nice style and a melancholic sense of humor.

  • This game really just helped remind me of how genius the original Oregon Trail's premise was, but by making it a post-society zombie game, they make the action part of it kind of bleak and compelling in its own way. Just the fight for survival and the road trip combined into something engaging, despite the simplicity of the visuals and sound design. Does a lot with a little and I like that.

  • The most talked about game of the year by far, and one I still generally enjoyed quite a bit despite what has now taken place with the ending. I actually liked the ending I originally got back in April, and to here it has been profoundly altered is much more upsetting to me than what I saw take place. Still, this game proved to be a lightning rod for discussion regarding player agency, storytelling in games, corporate meddling, DLC ethics, and all sorts of other topics. Conversations with people I didn't know were even into gaming popped up left and right, and for that, this game is significant. Oh, and they finally got the shooting right. Good job guys!

  • The most compelling WiiU experience there is. Makes a good case for the use of two screens and has some nice parallels to the "Souls" games, as everyone points out. The melee combat could be better and some loading times are annoying, but its still such an immersive, challenging game that it makes up for those problems quite handedly.

  • Only played it once but was struck by how well-paced and atmospheric it was. Definitely put thatgamecompany up a notch in my book, been meaning to go through the disc-version to check out their early games and the bonus materials.
