@kowalski: Why not ask one of them?

(I'd recommend phrasing the question as though you're not a troll)

I prefer to term "complete" or "finish" rather than "beat". It feels like a loaded term.

It's definitely a relic of an earlier era of video games. Sure, the term may apply to some modern games, but in other cases it doesn't really make a lot of sense. To me, saying you "beat" a game like The Last of Us is like saying you beat a TV show by watching every season.

This kind of literal analysis of common parlance is a little obnoxious to honest. Everyone knows what the title was trying to convey.

@powercosmic: What led you to believe anyone cares how you feel about staff/guests?

I'm far from Dan's biggest fan but find it difficult to comprehend how you can accuse another of toxicity given your own sentiments.

Recently I've decided to start completing games prior to allowing myself to buy anything, incentivising completing games and deincentivising impulse purchases. I've also adopted a one on one off policy in regards to what's installed on my PC, which also helps prevent impulse purchases.

There are games I'll still fall off. I started Hades not so long ago only to find myself in the position of not liking it. It feels like I'm grinding with every run opposed to actually trying to achieve the goal of escaping, a common problem for the genre in my experience. Divinity: Original Sin 2 is another title I tried to play not so long ago only to feel the narrative a somewhat empty shell of possability (The game throwing 10 routes of escaping the first island at you left me feeling like none actually matter. Coupled with the difficulty of the game, I last quit feeling like I'd need to level to advance without getting my butt kicked).

@fluidk: "I think it’s important to point out that you can only beat games which are constructed to challenge you. Most modern games are not, and therefore cannot be “beaten”, only “finished” as with a movie."

How much challenge is too much challenge and how little is too little? The measure you're applying is both arbitrary and subjective in that it's defined by an individuals skill and a games difficulty. Most people are likely to experience some challenge when playing most games, in my experince there are exceptionally few games without any form of challenge. Most can't be passively played as with a movie.

Undertale is an amazing game if you're looking for good vibes.

I've found games like Anno/Satisfactory often help me keep a clear head due to how much focus is required to achieve your objective (I need to build X, Y and Z so I can make XYZ and get to the next tier in the tech tree so I can make the other thing to get the other thing).

I'd also recommend KSP if you don't mind the steep learning curve. I've never experienced anything quite as gratifying in a game as achieving orbit or landing on the moon and making it home for the first time.

Minecraft got me through a tough breah up (Valheim would be a valid alternative). Breath of the WIlds is also pretty good if you own a switch, that and Nier Automata were highlights during tough times a couple of years ago.

@sicamore: My mistake. I was just trying to point out that the negatives could just as easily be replaced with the benign by those crafting their own narratives. Life is already enough of a bummer, no need for people to exercise their ability to imagine it at it's worst.

@sicamore: "The weird part for me here is Waypoint's involvement. From a business and PR perspective, I understand why they would partner up with Nextlander for E3 because the numbers look better when combined but given that they are fighting over the same audience, the perception(whether intentional or not) is that they are ganging up on GB while they're weak."

This is a weird take given the size of Red Venture/Vice relative to the size of NL. I think a more honest view of things is that NL and Waypoint staff have a fair bit of history working together and thought it'd be nice to team up for more exposure. The part about ganging up on GB seems an excessive narrative flourish.

You could have chosen to replace the gang up part with something like: NL asked GB to join them for E3 coverage (vice versa) but one refused the other due to corporate obligations?

"It's unfortunate that Jeff is not receiving any of the monetary goodwill that is being thrown at Nextlander and is almost being punished for not being greedy and not allowing fans to give GB more support beyond 35 or 50 dollars a year."

Jeff? You mean Red Venture?

Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition.

The games weren't really enhanced all that much in ways I'd hoped them to be. There is new content but in so far as the early game goes the improvements were few and far between. A shame considering the UI hasn't aged so well.

I didn't have strong opinions of most titles many have mentioned here. I was ready for Cyberpunk to be worse given the GB crews apathy prior to release. Mass Effect: Andromeda and Fallout 4 were more or less in the same boat (given the prior releases by those studios there was little reason to believe they'd be reinventing the wheel).

No Man's Sky was a pretty hard hitting disappointment due to the pre-release excitement and post release realisations. I've learnt to keep my expectations in check more and more since then. I'm interested to see what Starfield will be but my current expectations are otherwise relatively low given BGS's downward trend.
