In addition to Injustice 2 Pro Series and Brooklyn Beatdown, Curleh Circuit Finale is also today/tomorrow for the LAST UMvC3 TOURNAMENT before MvC:I; being shown over at https://www.twitch.tv/teamsp00ky. In addition to having players like ChrisG and RyanLV, there's also players like Sacktap who has been playing Ghost Rider, Nemesis, and.... Akuma/Iron Fist/Hawkeye? Also IHeartJustice beating Zero players with Wright/Cap/Strange! Also seen some Spencer, some Taskmaster, and some Arthur.

Online for DBFZ beta on X1 was down entire time so ended up playing against AI as bad training mode for 3 hours; managed to figure out some different combos using Vanish and got more comfortable with meter management; think my team for the moment at least is Cell/Vegeta for sure and either Trunks or Goku for 3rd. I like the assist on both and their combos, but I'm able to hit Goku's more consistently and don't have a great handle on Trunk's flip move so leaning Goku for the moment. Hopefully next session I can get some actual games in!

@esrever Prima Guide has couple helpful resources if you haven't seen them yet: https://www.primagames.com/games/dragon-ball-fighterz/tips/dragon-ball-fighterz-character-movelists for everyone's command list and https://www.primagames.com/games/dragon-ball-fighterz/tips/dragon-ball-fighterz-tips-how-play for mechanics.

I only managed to play during the maintenance windows; the AI being worthless let it be a basic training mode and by the end I at least figured out the basic route (ABBCxxDash AB jc AB C/Special/Super) and at least mechanics. Want to mess around with Vanish some more next session, tried it once and didn't know what to do it it sends them all the way to the other side o the screen (and on an X1 pad I ain't going to be able to do any IAD or anything to pick it up) but wondering if I can call beam assist to keep them up while I super dash in or something? Was also feeling a bit down on the combo system since it's mostly 3 attack buttons and one of them is a launcher but seeing some random Twitter videos and thinking on the Vanish I'll wait and see what people way smarter than me come up with.

4 hours until next one!

FYI anyone looking to get into the DBFZ beta on X1, if you download the Insider app and sign up still have shot to get in. I did it couple hours ago and did after missing it the first time around. First time slot is 2-5AM PDT tonight, then another from 10-1 tomorrow and couple more after that.

After playing a couple hours with Black Manta it was a nice reminder I'm awful at neutral in this game and should probably just stick to pew pew. Also every time I tried punishing something with 123xxDF1 MB I got B1 nothing instead a few frames late and usually blown up by someone mashing d2, so that's fun. Seems fun though, need to figure out trait as every time I tried using it I just got another d2 or worse b3'd...

Edit: First session live, Xbox version busted. Hopefully next goes better. Sounds like PS4 version is working great but X1 you can get to lobby can never find match, and it's giving me SFV beta flashbacks...

@fredchuckdave: OK I remember them saying they expected it'd take people a year but had assumed that was just dev estimating for average joe who casually played.

Also updated post with that, KI news, and some other misc news. Woo fighting games.

Been a while since done one of these so roundup of FG news lately:

  • Injustice 2
    • On Tuesday they released the first Fighter Pack 2 character, Black Manta, who seems to be more of a mid-range type character. I've only had a chance to play him for 15 minutes or so but he seems to be more of a midrange type character; his F2 is amazing. His trait is the jetpack which he can cancel into and out of and will probably lead to some tricky stuff but I haven't seen/played enough with it yet to know how good it'll actually be. Between that and his teleport punch it feels like he'll be a good answer for zoning similar to Supergirl and I expect next time I play Deadshot I'll be seeing a bunch of them.
    • Earlier last week they also released their September patch which contained mostly bug fixes and couple of minor tweaks for Starfire. However the biggest change was now ranked matches are 3/5 instead of FT1, and player matches are broken up into 2 playlists; one for gear and one for competitive mode. I was worried at first 3/5 would feel too long but I've actually ended up loving it and has been causing me to play more I2 than anything else for the past couple of weeks. The implementation is great as well, it goes by tournament rules where after both players choose a character it auto-select a stage, then after each match the losing player can swap characters which as far as I can think of is the first game with sets to allow this? It's been great motivation to learn a new character (Aquaman for now, going to try out Manta soon), I can try them for the first game and see how it goes and if I get completely destroyed or don't like the match-up I can switch over to Deadshot. The only downside is if a match is laggy there's no way to exit early but overall the net code is good enough that it's not an issue and it gives you the option to not accept a match if the ping is over 200 that it hasn't been much of an issue. Usually it's scrubby players who lag anyways and playing Deadshot is a great way to get people to quit after the first game usually followed by mic cursing or messages.
    • They're also starting to do legendary gear for each character that requires you to complete a multiverse with bunch of requirements they expect will take people months/year to complete. Each legendary will be their gear accessory so Wonder Woman's Sword/Shield for example. More coming soon. (thanks FDC for correction)
  • Tekken 7
    • A couple weeks ago the first DLC pack was released which contained Tekken Bowling and a bunch of bikinis/fundoshis costumes. Tekken Bowling unfortunately is local only so I ended up passing on it and still haven't seen much of it, but people seem to enjoy it?
    • They also made another change to the online where you can no longer see player names when match-making in Ranked so it's just connection and disconnection %, and broke/unbroke the online. Feels like it's been real hit-or-miss week-to-week
    • The arcade version just received a balance patch (SRK link) with a bunch of bug fixes (changing hit/hurt boxes so stuff works more consistently), some Lee buffs, and some Xiaoyu/Kazumi nerfs. No date for console versions but I'd assume it's soonish.
  • Dragon Ball FighterZ
    • The closed beta is set to take place this weekend, if you were one of the lucky ones who got it then you should've gotten an email on PSN or have the option to download on X1. They also sent out a rejection email to everyone who didn't get it in which was a real roller coaster of emotions from "YES WEEKEND SET!" to opening it and realizing what it was. Excited to see more footage at least
    Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite
    • Early copies of the game are getting out there so there's a BUNCH of gameplay videos/Twitch streams to watch. Some details on stuff outside of the gameplay: The arcade mode does not have endings for characters but does unlock another color for both characters you complete it with; it sounds like completing it a second time unlocks the second color for a total of 4. There's also a gallery that has a bunch of information on characters and bios and music selectors and such that I think unlocks, it's not much but it's something.
    • People have played through the story (and sound positive on it?). The female Monster Hunter in Rathalos armor does appear in it along with Death from Marvel; there is no Venom or Winter Soldier so them as DLC seems likely considering they were in the zip leak
    • Tyrant (one of the people who has been posting early footage from trade events) has started doing a tutorial series for people gearing up for the game. Episode 2 is here going over the Infinity Stones and what each do, sure he'll have more up going forward.
    • Contray to my earlier worry, some people have played online and confirmed it does use Rollback, not Delay. Early reports sound very positive but how it performs pre-release doesn't mean much.
    Street Fighter V
    • There's a bunch of leaks about new characters and new systems for Season 3/Super Street Fighter V, if interested google around. If true/potentially true that sound neat but no idea how legit they are so won't post here. Most of them revolve around changes to the V System and some potential characters for S3.
    • Fuck Alex. That's not news I'm just bitter.
  • BlazBlue: Central Fiction
  • BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle
    • A new Persona character is scheduled to be announced tonight, will update this when they are. Will be good indication of if they're doing new characters from it or just old ones based on if they're from P5 and new model or if they're someone from P4A/P4U
    • Edit: Was Yosuke from P4 and Linne from UNIEL.
  • Killer Instinct
    • A couple weeks ago the 3.9 balance patch came out (full notes here) with a bunch of fixes for Eagle, some buffs to Fulgore and Kan-Ra, and some nerfs for Cinder and Mira. Keits also mentioned the team is pretty happy with where the game is in terms of balance after this patch so it'll be the last one for the foreseeable future. With Eagle being the last announced character and nothing else big announced on the horizon content-wise, I take that to mean they're winding down support for the game, which after almost 4 years feels like a good length of time.
    • In addition to the Steam version coming soon, they announced that the Steam version will also be cross-play with the Windows Store and Xbox One! I believe this is one of the first games to do so outside of Age of Empires; I remember hearing horror stories about the Windows store versions of Call of Duty and such being ghost towns as they were limited, so this is great to hear! Also hopefully means few more people pick up the game.
  • Miscellaneous Games
    • Arms yesterday got its second DLC character, Lola Pop who is a clown I guess? They also finally included a way to remap controls which seems to have people excited.
    • Samurai Showdown V Special came out on PSN yesterday (as announced around EVO) for PS4/Vita, not sure how the net code is but most of the SNK games haven't been great (Garou is only one I've personally tried and it was some of the worst I've ever experienced) so if it's something you're wanting to grab maybe look around first.
    • Fight ofGods is a game that came out that got banned in a bunch of places for having Buddha in it. Some people seem to think it's actually kind of fun to mess with and it'll be appearing at couple tournaments so I guess it's slightly more than a joke game?
    • Them's Fightin' Herds, the Marvel vs Capcom style fighting game that started out as My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic before having to change due to copyright and was Kickstarted I don't know how long ago, is having its beta NDA lifted tomorrow (9/15). I backed this and was interested in playing it because I wanted a new fighting game then only glanced at the monthly updates since then, so I'm looking forward to seeing what it is and what they've done since I last saw it.... couple years ago at this point? They're shooting for end of this year now.
    • Fantasy Strike, the David Sirlin game, launches in early access tomorrow (9/15) for $20. I signed up for the Patreon late last year to try it out and didn't enjoy it but they've made some big changes both in terms of mechanics and graphic styles so it no longer looks like a flash game they created with a bunch of stolen assets. May be worth giving another look at least.
    • Rivals of Aether got its first guest character last month with Ori from Ori and the Blind Forest. It also reminded me a new Ori game is coming which is exciting.

Lots of good stuff happening! With TGS happening next week I'm sure we'll get some more news; I know at least Arika's project will be there and maybe we'll get some more Street Fighter info (still waiting for that anniversary collection....)

One week to Marvel! One week to Marvel! One week to Marvel! (please let net code be good)

Justin Wong got early access from Capcom and is streaming Training/Versus mode with Marn and Floe at https://www.twitch.tv/jwonggg so rest of my day is gone. Seeing on Twitter that Clockwork and Maximillian are/will be streaming as well.

Also from Max, expect to see bunch more content going up this week from folks.

(definitely stealing that Captain America day 1 combo from Justin....)

Max streaming PC version, said graphics options are similar to SFV and at least initially seems like perfectly fine version.

Yipes/Persia streaming over at https://www.twitch.tv/ifcyipes grinding Dante/UIltron/Gamora.

Training mode options looking similar to SFV as well with options for multiple recordings, setting wake-ups, etc. That said there's also an option to simulate network play by putting in a number of frames, which makes it seem more like delay-based which hmmmmmmmmm

There were also bunch of worries about the damage in this game being light but with 1 bar super I'm seeing a bunch of 50% combos if not more so that's probably fine. In other words it seems like MAHVEL!

For consoles it just treats the stick as a controller so you're good for any fighting game or non-fighting games. For PC it can be a bit more finicky but for the most part anything that supports XInput (any big fighting game on Steam) will be good. I picked up a Hori Real Arcade Pro N Hayabusa about a month ago after switching from a Mad Catz TE2 and have been loving it; works for PS3/4/PC and you can grab it off Amazon, FocusAttack, or ArcadeShock (which is where I grabbed mine from, both them and FocusAttack also sell a bunch of console converters and customization parts if you get into that). The button layout on it is slightly different than most sticks so if you've tried one before it may take a bit of getting used to but now I think I prefer it.

I've also heard a lot of good things about the Qanba Obsidian and Razar Panthera though haven't used either; the Panthera sounds like it's more mod-friendly so again if that's something you're interested in it may be worth a look.

Just finished episode 1, it has me in a similar place as Episode 1 of the main game where I'm not quite 100% sold on it but still wanting to see where it goes. Hearing the VO for Chloe at the start almost made me just turn off the game because of how different it was, but by the end I'd gotten over it and didn't notice it or the others. Still not sure it's a story I needed to play through but at least for now I'm happy to be doing so.

Googling around a bit sounds like the next episode won't be out until late October/early November, looking forward to it.

Yeah grabbing Game Pass for a couple months while playing catch-up sounds like a good idea. Scrolling through the list of games on there, the ones that caught my eye:

And then few other games people haven't metioned:

Destiny 2 is also out next week, and Cuphead towards the end of the month.

It's not out on PC for another 1.5 hours. I'm still skeptical since different team and no time mechanic (and a story I don't know I needed) but looking at a couple reviews they sound pretty positive, so think I'll dive in this weekend.
