List items

  • Did to Mario what Horde Mode did to Gears of War 2, but with the advantage of Mario being a cultural phenomenon that is more easily understood than any shooting game could ever hope to be.

  • The career is dull, and the extras are uninspired, but the fighting is so incredibly visceral that it was really hard for me to ever put the game down.

  • Diablo 3.

  • This'll probably be the one that gets me weird looks, like The Bourne Conspiracy last year, but it's a great use of the license, it's as good a Wolverine game as Batman is a Batman game, and the combat is oddly fulfilling. There's something there that's hard to describe, which makes the game hard to recommend, but I had a really surprising amount of fun with it. Oh, and it's WAY better than the movie.

  • See, I don't know about you guys, but I am as much into "games as toys" as I am into "games as art," and this is probably the most honest toy game made on a modern console.

  • Probably my favorite open world game. It's so easy to get into entirely ridiculous situations, as well as just being a genuinely enjoyable skating game. Maybe a little hard to get the mechanics down, but progression is based on the player understanding the mechanics that are available from the start, rather than introducing new mechanics.

  • It's the second Left 4 Dead. Haven't played nearly as much as I want to, though.

  • Okay okay, fine. Not a fan of spec-ops, not a fan of what happened to the multi-player, but before it got all crazy-janky-broken, this game was great. The single player is not nearly as good though. Any arguments for this game to be Game of the Year needs to concern the fact that it dominated the news for the entire year, then came out and had a massive launch. As a game? Eh, not so much.

  • The arm is your wife. It's also a pretty okay game up until that. This game is here almost entirely for the sheer nerve of the ending.
