I love Disney stuff, but I find everything on the SE side of KH soul-wrenchingly awkward. The earnest talks about hearts and darkness, the legion of black-clad Gaia online characters with x's in their names, the reveals that are shot and voiced in a way that is clearly meant to evoke emotion that the writing just isn't capable of supporting... It all feels like the worst parts of Final Fantasy to me, like every scene is laughing Tidus. I realize not everyone feels that way, and Dan shouldn't be so dismissive by just saying "it's aggressively dumb", but I think I know why he feels that way. It just evokes AOL chatroom roleplaying in a way that makes it really, really hard to watch.
This is likely the result of the game maybe targeting a younger demographic because of its Disney association, but the key thing about Disney is that their best stuff is well-written and, in some ways, self-aware, enough so that it feels whimsical rather than juvenile. Kingdom Hearts' original material just really missed that mark for me, in a way that soured me on the series.
