Landon's Games of the Year 2016

Another year, another list of all the games I played and enjoyed this year. I played more than I thought I would and there are quite a few surprises on here that I didn't see coming.

List items

  • I didn't start playing Hitman till about a month ago but it's already taken the number one spot on my list. I haven't had THIS much fun in a stealth game for a VERY long time. Killing bad people in wonderfully goofy ways has never been so much fun.

  • As of me writing this list, I haven't finished the final episode of this series but this is still the most absolutely polished and well told story Telltale has told yet. Plenty of solid spins on the Batman Mythos had me trying to figure out just what kind of game they were trying to make and by the 2nd episode I was sold. Telltale makes them like nobody else.

  • I DROPPPED A GIANT ROBOT ON TOP OF ANOTHER GIANT ROBOT AND IT BLEW IT UP AND IT WAS REALLY FRICKEN COOL.

  • Blizzard cares about a polished experience like no other developers and it really shows in Overwatch. I've never seen so many people take to a game like Overwatch before. Blizzard created a world that people absolutely fell in love with and for good reason.

  • In a year where I finally beat Spelunky the hard way, Enter the Gungeon started scratching that rouge-like itch for me like nothing else this year.

  • Destiny's 2016 expansion was a bit of a non-starter for me but that doesn't undo the absolutely insane amount of hours that I poured into it this year. Bungie has really struck something special that I hope they 100% nail in Destiny 2 next year.

  • Battlefield 1 moves the Battlefield formula into The Great War and retains how much fun it is. I still really suck at Battlefield, but I also still have a ton of fun.

  • Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is a very polished and fun sandbox that I haven't spent much time in since beating the game but shows that these types of stealth games are very much my bag.

  • FH3 is the most fun I've had in an open world driving game since the first Horizon. These games are a ton of fun and the drivatar system helps them feel more alive than they probably really are.

  • I've only played the demo but I made a copy of a donut in a copy machine and that's all you need to know.
