Regrets and Honorable Mentions:

Regrettably Not Played:

  • Tales from the Borderlands
  • Dying Light
  • Axiom Verge (waiting on Vita)
  • Invisible, Inc.
  • The Witcher 3
  • Metal Gear Solid V
  • Mad Max
  • Rise of the Tomb Raider
  • Nuclear Throne
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel

Honorable Mention:

  • Armikrog
    • I hold a special place in my heart for The Neverhood and backed the Armikrog Kickstarter without hesitation. I'm happy w/ how the game turned out and enjoyed it. It didn't make the cut, because I just don't have the patience for adventure games anymore.
  • Bastion
    • Playing through it again on Vita reminded me how good the game is. I'm still working towards the Platinum.
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC
    • FC was incredible. So incredible that after spending 90 hours beating it once, I put another 70 hours into it in preparation for SC coming out. While incredibly charming and pretty wonderful, it hasn't kept my attention enough to finish it. The dialog tends to go on and on and on and this has been off putting. I might regret my choice when I finish it, but we'll see.
  • Terraria 1.3.0
    • I spent a ton of time on this game this year -- a lot of it with my son before he got banned from it by his mother. I hadn't played since before 1.2.0, so it was hard to tell what was part of the 1.3.0 update was part of 1.2.0 or whatever else I missed. Needless to say, there was so much new content that kept the game fresh and interesting.
  • Ultra Street Fighter IV (PS4)
    • The "definitive" edition on PS4 was released in 2015. It was a rocky launch, but everything is squared away now and the game is still amazing. And yes, I'm still playing it... a lot.

List items

  • "This game is amazing."

Those 4 words make up the last phrase written for day 1 of the "Bloodborne Log" I diligently kept as I played (http://bit.ly/1TtJLFH). Bloodborne is the first game that compelled me to exhaustively write about (18 pages). I tore through the game, earning the Platinum in 2 weeks and 1 day. That wasn't enough to satisfy my hunger for blood echos though, as I spent the next few weeks doing a low level run through most of the game (http://bit.ly/1UkeuVO).

  • Life Is Strange took the Telltale formula and perfected it with the time mechanic. No longer did I have to wonder what would have happened or how the characters would have reacted had I chose a different path. I could just rewind time, check out all outcomes, and pick which one I liked the best. Aside from the mechanics, the story was really compelling and kept me interested through all the episodes.

  • I'm typically not a fan of horror, but the fervor around Until Dawn peaked my interest enough to pick it up. I did not regret it for a second playing through the entire game. The characters were incredibly realized with expertly crafted facial animations, and spot on voice work. The story and plot twists rocketed this game towards the top of my list.

  • I'm not sure why everyone holds this game in such low regard. I really enjoyed it. It played well and looked absolutely stunning. The story was really interesting and was set up in such a way to allow for endless, probably fascinating spin-offs spanning different eras and locales. It's worth noting that I did pick this up for $20 on Prime Day... perhaps I'd feel different if I paid $60 and Platinum'd the game after only 18 hours.

  • Out of all the games on my list, I've played Super Mario Maker the least. I ended up buying it as a Christmas present for the family and as a result, didn't actually play it until Christmas.

I suspect it might have ended up on my list even if I hadn't played it however, simply because of how entertaining it has been to watch since September (mainly Patrick vs Dan and the Giant Bomb).

  • I don't really know what to say about this game. There was so much hype surrounding it at release, and while it didn't live up to that hype, it was still an amazing and incredibly unique experience. The game is just packed with fresh and creative ideas, from the battle system, to the to the unforgettable final boss.

  • I placed this at 7 when I originally made this list at the end of the year, but never wrote anything here. It's now July, 2016 and I don't really have a fond memory of this game. I'm leaving it where it was because that's how I felt at the time, but it felt more like a chore than a fun experience. I remember the story being good, but it didn't completely capture me like Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

  • The original OlliOlli was pretty perfect, so I was surprised at how much the developers improved the game in OlliOlli2. The new combo mechanics (manuals, reverts, grind switching) really kept things interesting. As with the original game, I'll still never be able to beat RAD mode. =[

  • The original Magicka was literally incredible -- I played it on PC and consider it to be perfect. When Magicka 2 was released, I was excited, but that excitement was quelled by reviews saying it was lackluster compared to the original. When I got the game for free from PS Plus, I played through the first 2 chapters solo and understood what the reviews were saying. I wasn't looking forward to finishing the game, but when a friend offered to play some of it with me, we ended up playing the last 8 chapters through to the end without stopping. I felt that same joy I had felt with the original game, which, as I recall now, I also played with friends.

  • I waited a few months after release to get this, despite be really interested in it. I thought I'd be terrible at it and wasn't up for suffering. I picked it up later in the year, and while it was hard, it didn't feel impossible. I had a great time going through it, figuring out how to beat all the bosses. I'll never Platinum it, but that's OK.
