Favourite games of 2016

These are the games that kept me sane this year!

List items

  • No contest. World of Warcraft continues to be the greatest game ever crafted and its latest content is the best it has ever offered. Nothing else comes close. It has an activity befitting every mood, both single and multiplayer. It's a hobby on its own, deserving of its own top ten list. It has everything I want from a game, and this expansion focuses on my favourite part of its story.

  • Blizzard isn't just great at updating their old games, they make the best stuff from scratch too. They launched a completely new series this year and it blows away all competition. An incredibly well designed multiplayer shooter that mixes the cool with the silly in a way that hasn't been done this well since TimeSplitters. And that itch was in desperate need of some scratching.

  • Speaking of classic shooters... THE classic shooter had a new instalment too this year and no one expected it to be any good. We were all wrong. What Overwatch did for multiplayer shooters, DOOM did for singleplayer shootybang: they each took the best of games from "back then" and polished it to hell (yep, intended) with modern tech and understanding of action game design. This is a riveting, non-stop adrenaline rush that can be infinitely replayed.

  • The complete opposite of an action game and far from a polished experience, but a master class in narrative and level design. It's absolutely worth suffering the frustratingly bad controls. A story that'll stay with you and one that could only have been told this well through this wonderful medium.

  • Also not exactly the most polished piece of software, but one hell of a ride. No other game ever captured the feeling of traveling so wonderfully and the combat was incredibly fun. Can't say I was able to follow the story, but that's not a series first, and apparently not that vital to the experience. Loved the characters and I loved escorting them to their destination.

  • Gorgeous, challenging, amazingly atmospheric and another brilliant mix of old and new. That was just my thing this year, I suppose.

  • The main Pokémon games have always maintained their incredibly fun core, and this one is a particularly refreshing sequel. A cartridge filled with happy.

  • Not released this year, but I've put so many hours into it in 2016, leaving it out would just be wrong. The MOBA that saved the genre for me. Fantastic new heroes and maps were added throughout the year and kept grabbing my attention even with WoW: Legion and Overwatch out and about.

  • I keep coming back to this one as well. If it's not for some online For Glory matches, it's probably to watch a weekend tournament adventure of ZeRo, Nairo, Abadango, Mr. R, MKLeo and the others, which will just lead to me jumping back into some For Glory matches anyway. While the amount of Smash weekends have diminished in 2016, they were still highlights of my gaming year.

  • Another classic for the ages. Me and my girlfriend spent a good few weeks adventuring through our own Minecraft Realm. A wonderful, cozy game, interupted by the occasional heart attack when a Creeper explodes right behind you. We built and explored our gaming hours away, eventually connecting all our settlements with a railroad system. We even built a giant derpbird for our one year anniversary. It still stands, proudly.
