My best video games of 2012

2012 has been a bit of an off year for AAA games, Bioshock: Infinite being put off until next year. However it has marked the rise of quality downloadable titles.

  • Probably the best told video game story in recent years. Being a fan of the comic books and the television series, I was half expecting this to be a quick cash grab. Especially after Telltale's poor attempt making 'Heavy Rain' like Jurassic Park game. Walking Dead manages to capture the bleak tone of the comics I love so much and also the focus on the survivors instead of the undead horde. The characters are great, well written and acted. Especially the two main characters, Lee and Clementine, whose relationship develops throughout the story. Out of all the games this year, this is the one that I was most invested in, fully deserves all the praise it gets. Really looking forward to see what they do with the second season.

  • I love the original XCOM, though it has aged horribly. So it's really cool to see an updated and streamlined version is. The combat is fun and engaging as well as the base management stuff, which strikes a good balance. Shame the endings anti-climatic, not enough to sour the experience. Would love to see a sequel to this.

  • Yeah, yeah I know that this came out last year on the PC. But the 360 version was released this year. Great RPG with a engaging story, great characters and good voice acting. Somewhat got rid of the bad taste that Mass Effect 3 left.

  • I hate Far Cry 2. Travelling was boring, the guns felt flimsy and the story was weapons grade shite. Which makes me surprised that I like this game as much as I do. The world is lively and interesting (A lot like Red Dead Redemption), there is plenty to do and taking down enemy outposts is fun. The side stuff made this game for me. Only drawback is the main story ends up being rather crappy and an excellent character (Vaas) is ultimately wasted. :(

  • This game is nuts. You get stabbed through the planet. Play it.

  • This was made by one guy! I was initially put off by the art style, but once I got over it I found a cool indie game with a nice story and a smooth combat system. Plus its metroidvania, which is a plus.

  • A really well done 2D stealth game. Felt really good to take out a room of guys silently.

  • This game seems really simple until you realise what its actual purpose is and you have to crack out the notepad and pencil.

  • I have a soft spot for Halo multiplayer. Sue me.

  • This is a game that I was ultimately disappointed by. Turned out to be too linear and had a messed up disguise system. However I did find some enjoyment in this game from the contracts mode. The game has a great sense of humor and a lot of dialogue that can be easily missed. A decent game but not on Blood Money's level.
