Futility 0

You know, it is hard to know when to admit defeat in things. All the time I feel subjected to great scrutiny in all I do, and no matter how hard I try I often feel I am being held back, oppressed and deflated through expectations. I guess my own efforts that end in futility makes pastimes like this more cathartic for me. To be honest, the issue of futility is something that comes up a lot when dealing with video games. Take, for example, the popularity of first person shooters like Call of Duty...

A Letter from a Courier 0

I hate having bad days. You would think that after several years of carrying packages as a courier for those rich shmucks in the wasteland id probably seen it all. Stabbings, tripwires, super mutants gutting folk alive for no reason, hell, going into gang territory is always a plus too, I get to use my 10 millimeter for a change instead of a baseball bat. But damn, getting captured and robbed by some zoot suit wearing motherfucker and left in the ground with a bullet hole in your head counts as...

Childhood Dreams with Treats and Screams 0

Think back when you were a young child on Halloween. Innocent and bright eyed, with imagination flowing from you’re gray matter like a uncontrollable waterfall, churning all kinds of thoughts of fear and excitement from the creeps and critters that “haunt” the streets at night on your endless quest for candy and other confectionary treats. You’re costumes, be it homemade or store bought, became the uniforms of the journey. This is the feeling that is present in Double Fine’s “Costume Quest,” an ...

A Rookie Season 0

Well with the summer beginning to wind down the best sport this side of poker is upon us, NFL Football. Lacing up the boots and grabbing pigskin on the gridiron is perhaps one of the last bastions’ of balls-breaking manliness people can see in a sport today. Even soccer, with all of it’s vuvuzelas, can’t touch the sport. But when it comes to video games Football, and most sports in general, have been mediocre at best. Streamlined, corporatized releases by EA when it comes to games like Ma...

Defining Dissapointment 0

I sometimes think I throw the word disappointment around too much, mainly because it is the type of headlining word that can encompass pretty much any negative feelings on a video game. And not just downright scathing for crap like “Survivor” or “Limbo of the Lost” either, a game that is disappointing you usually have high hopes for. You are expecting something amazing, and you receive something mediocre, like constant Madden sequels not changing much.  Sadly, “Metroid: Other M” falls ...

Doing Barrell Rolls Since 1996 0

Anyone who is a fan of Nintendo Games is probably a fan of the Star Fox Series. The anthropomorphic space opera is one of the most recognizable rail shooting space games created by the crimson N, and has for years enthralled gamers with it’s rather rich story and epic sense of engagements. While the series got a head start on the Super Nintendo, “Star Fox 64” is perhaps the pinnacle of the entire series, offering all the action and drama that Nintendo is actually capable of if they set t...

Deflated Expectations 0

Back in 2007, A video game released by the company 2k Games and developed by Irrational Studios literally wiped the floor of my own expectations on the First Person Genre. A game that combined philosophical teachings, chilling design and scripted storyline moments with well executed controls through tired yet true combinations made a tour de force of a game that I doubt will ever be experienced in the genre for years to come. That game was “Bioshock.” It is funny to think that three ye...

Gotta Hunt em' All 0

Everywhere we see games that are hyped to be the next big franchise. We see it from countless of new titles that gain universal acclaim from reviewers, like Guitar Hero and Halo, but every so often there is an anomaly that comes up, a game that is kind of hard to classify because it totally bends the genres in ways that are innovative and sometimes tedious. The biggest thing right now is “Monster Hunter,” in Japan, at least. Since the titles debut by Capcom on the Playstation 2 back in ...

Should you let this Sneak by? 0

You ever wonder what constitutes a bad video game? Yeah there are really terrible games out there like “Survivor: The Interactive Game”, “Superman 64” and even “E.T The Extra-Terrestrial.”  that are notoriously bad. But there are also games that fall into the shady gray area, something about the games are endearing , but it has major flaws that hold it back from being considered good. “Alpha Protocol” is one of those games. Developed by Obsidian Entertainment, the makers of “Star Wars: K...

An Old Dungeon Awaits.... 0

Anyone who is a fan of RPGS probably has never played dungeon crawlers before, especially in the present day. Dungeon crawlers, if you wish to hear what I consider the definition is, it is basically a first or third person view game featuring D&D rules of balanced parties of nameless adventurers wandering a maze-like dungeon filled with traps, secret doors and tons of monsters. The trick to these games is teamwork with your party and a lot of luck and grinding. Sadly, this type of game is ...

A Side Order of Blood with your Stylish Guts? 0

The Nintendo Wii has been somewhat devoid of anything good lately. Oh sure, a flash in the pan like Zack and Wiki and No More Heroes comes around now and again, but nothing with great longevity has graced the system from a third party developer since Boom Blox. Sega, hoping to capture a niche market on the system, is trying to take up the mantle in hardcore, mature games for the Wii, a market in itself that is fairly bare. Games like House of the Dead: Overkill, the upcoming Conduit, and Madwo...

The Dead Roam the Net. 0

Zombies are easily in the top ten of popular culture icons that all geeks, nerds, and activists seem to never get enough of. Right up there with the likes of pirates and ninjas, zombies, and the zombie game, are usually a dime a dozen in the video game market, with some type of flesh eating monstrosity stalking you in droves as you avoid their presence through gunplay or running away. A tired but true formula, the guys over at Valve decided to take it and morph it into a fun, albeit limited co-...

Over Hype, Part Deux. 1

Ok, ok. I doubt this review in any way, shape or form, actually sway the 4 plus million people who bought, played, and are currently fragging it out online like the grenade spammers they are on “Modern Warfare 2.” And I seriously doubt I will even get good reviews or recommendations for this following review, but to that, I say, oh well. Why this preface? Because “Modern Warfare 2” is a game I wanted so bad to hate, and while it is FAR from an A game, like Activisions near perfect hype machine ...

Over-Hyped 0

With throngs of bros and fanboys rushing to get the latest kill simulator known as “Modern Warfare 2” from their local shopkeeps, I thought it would be appropriate to talk about the original that started this craze, “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.” A game that everyone heralded to be so good that it blew Halo out of the water in terms of FPS dominance, and thanks to a billion dollar marketing campaign, it would have you believe in that hype (and is trying to do it again, mind you.) And in truth...

Great Potential...Wasted Oppertunity. 0

A while ago, I came across a game that I never saw in the stores before. Called “Battle Fantasia” and produced by Aksys games and developed by Arc system works, I got excited by the prospects of what I uncovered. A 3-D fighting game on a 2-D plane, with great influence in fantasy and steampunk elements, makes for an interesting experience to say the least, so I took a gamble on something new. When the dust was settled, and I exhausted my time with it, I was torn though, by how I felt about the...

Mortals, Take Heed... 0

Let’s make no mistake of it; Tim Schafer is an undisputed god of game design. As heralded as Shigeru Miyamoto and Sid Meier, Schafer is known for his great humor, strong storylines, fantastic new worlds and oozing production values in the games he has created. His last opus, “Psychonauts”, was an example of his great design. So how does his latest creation, “Brutal Legend” fare up? Well, before I continue to give verbal fellatio to Tim Schafer, let me be clear to say that “Brutal Legend” is a g...

The Resistance Is A Misnomer 0

Red Faction was a good yet forgettable FPS that was ported to the early Playstation 2 days back when FPS titles were pre-Halo bubble. Now fast forward nine years later, and the team at Volition Inc. decided to revive the series with a third installment in the title. It followed the same formula for the sequel, Red Faction 2, and was a good, but again forgettable entry into the shooter market. But now, Volition decided to go the 3 person route with “Red Faction: Guerilla.” Now I give a lot of c...

The Return of the Chief. 0

All trilogys are epics, aren't they? Look at some of the best trilogys in the history of the media. Lord of the Rings, The Godfather, Star Wars (The REAL ones), and even other games, like Metroid Prime, have nitched into something of a saga that has been created for the media.  Maybe good things just come in 3's. Who knows? It seems like this trend is never going to break. And to an extent, it doesn't break with Halo. The third chapter in the somewhat overrated series is stronger than Halo ...

Bio-Thing-Horror Game? 0

Long ago, survival horror games were essentially a 3rd person action romp with poor controls, lack of ammo, and slow moving zombies always skittering about in the unlikeliest of places. While survival horror games are now turning into the shock schlock that many slasher movies have already perfected, spatter porn and all, there is no denying that the sense of terror, of pure dread, is craved by fans. Sure, Resident Evil and Silent Hill have grown up, and Fatal Frame is such a niche game to p...

The Revolution of Yesterday 0

With all the turmoil in the world today, it is kind of hard to fathom that so much has been the cause by those in power. Dictators, totalitarianism movements, capitalists, communists, fascists, every –ist under the sun practically can be attributed to some atrocity that has occurred in the past. Enter revolutions, revolts of organized resistance that occur against oppressing powers of varying success. While this is pretty much an ebb and flow in the real world. In the realm of video games f...

Paint the Town Red, Yellow, Blue.... 0

When the Nintendo Wii came out, I was as excited as a schoolboy on his first date, itching to get my hands on the pearly white rectangle and see what it can do to innovate the video gaming market. Now, almost two years since it’s release, the Wii has been fun, but somewhat stagnant in terms of its gameplay options. Few third party games have been made that truly revolutionize how we play games. In fact, most of them are downright appalling. Enter De Blob, a literal art project by D...

When I rented out Rock Revolution from my store last week, my co-worker said, “I must be obsessed with guitar games for renting out that piece of  shit.” I replied to him that I do it so I can review it, and make a comparison to the three guitar games out there, so I plopped myself down and fired up the game, ready for whatever experience they throw at me. Then I plopped back up a few hours later, wanting to burn the disc in front of me for being so terrible. Thank god I got to play this for f...

Game Parody, Bland Shooter 0

I’ve always felt there was a difference between being humorous and having a sense of humor. It is actually a slight distinction because to be funny you need to be talented enough to craft a good joke. Having a sense of humor though is different, because you’re willing to take a joke from any angle, and appreciate what it is, even if it fell flat. Well you might be wondering why the hell I’m talking about this at the start of a review. Well, the game were dealing with has a sense of humor about ...

What The F*ck? 0

I rarely review PC games, mainly because my laptop can barely hold the Spore creature creator, but Postal 2 was one I couldn’t pass up to exercise my hyperbole skills on. To be frank, there is little to say about it, other than that it’s a game goes beyond the envelope to shock, disgust, and amuse the players with its tween humor and over the top violence. Frankly, the only reason I got it was because I bought the movie on DVD, as each copy comes with the game for the free price of $19.99. The ...

The Paradox of Immerson 0

It is interesting to see how skewed the views of a game developer, yet how accurate their gameplay becomes when you actually study the region the game takes place. “Far Cry 2” a game made by the guys from Ubisoft, takes the realistic approach based on Crytek’s engine and ups it further by accidently capturing how realistic the events that may occur in a war torn African continent may be. You star as one of twelve unique but interchangable mercenaries who is tasked to find an arms dealer known a...

It’s tough to be a historian and not to point out the historical inaccuracies that litter “sim” games like “Bladestorm: The Hundred Years’ War”. Made by Koei, who makes the other, long lasting (cough) “sim” games like Dynasty Warriors, has decided to go into Europe and do what they do best, bastardize history and create total chaos thanks to the fine art of button mashing. You star as a created mercenary who, thanks to a one eyed innkeeper, gets your start during the hundred year’s war betw...
