Free games to beat away the slow season and, Beat the summer heat

I am broke,
Far beyond broke. I also, have been playing a fair amount of oddities this summer. With that in mind I thought I'd put together a list of some of free games you could be playing.

GAMES,

spelunky

system shock
n (the first game not N+ but, still a ninja game)

super mario bros crossover

http://osu.ppy.sh/p/about

ikachan

cave story
frozen bubble

Thanks to the GiantBomb user

louiedog I realized a grave error in not including Octodad and,

Please if you enjoy it kick in a few bucks so part 2 can get made.

Collections of games,

https://www.digipen.edu/gallery/games/

http://www.reloaded.org/index.php

http://www.abandonia.com

Digipen is filled with student projects. I couldn't tell you what is good or not in that but, There are a ton of little games.
Reloaded and abandonia are filled with abandon ware and free ware games. Even though sometimes abandonia has a buy through link instead of a download link and,  both sites have games that can sometimes be a pain in the ass to get working with modern computers.

not exactly “free” but, close enough,

http://projectorigin.warnerbros.com/fearcombat/main

http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/beneath_a_steel_sky
http://www.rockstargames.com/classics/?id=1
I also forgot, you can get Back to the future episode 1 for free on telltales site
and, Wolfenstein: Enemy territory
there are also a few things on steam for free provided you want to have a steam account like Team fortress 2 and Trackmania.
I say free but, not free because you have to register them to use them but not a bad deal for a free game.

Hope this list helps someone play something they will enjoy.
I will add a secondary note in here that if you enjoy any of the above games or any game for that matter please support those games in whatever way you see fit.
Be that by money or simply sitting down and, Writing your favorite game makes a note. Working in the video game industry sometimes can blow. It's cool
to know people like what you put your heart into.

I don't think those last ones are entirely legal. However, you're lucky in that for whatever reason, I can't flag that post. Hopefully, a mod will see this post and reset my karma.

@Video_Game_King:  Which ones exactly? when it comes Abandon Ware can be kind of weird and sketchy. Most of the time It's a combo of the people who ported the game going under, not caring or, the original owner of said copy rights being rather old and not giving a shit about a PC port.  If it's on that abandonia.com site they are pretty good
about policing itself which is why a bunch of the games on there lead to pay sites like GOG.com or, they will straight up say "This work is protected by the ESA"

I am not advocating piracy at all. I was going to talk about emulation too As I am a advocate of emulation in all forms But, It does walk a very fine grey line of legality
even when you own the original work. So buy your emulation for your platform of choice like the genesis collection or similar packages

The "last ones" as in "the ones in the second post." Not sure if abandonware is allowed on this site, so I'd play it safe and keep that away. Limit it to freeware, like the Marathon games, early GTAs, Tyrian, etc.

@Video_Game_King: I deleted the list , Problem solved? Don't want to start no shit and, or get nobody in trouble over some games you could find at a swap meet for a dollar.

Spelunky's awesome, what's not to like about a side scrolling roguelike?

I don't know if these are available somewhere in the depths of those sites but http://www.supercratebox.com/ is a fun little 2D action game and http://www.desktopdungeons.net/ is the bastard child of a puzzle game and a roguelike.

You can pay for a shinier version of DD but I spent quite a few hours with the freeware version.

ScummVM is a program that runs old adventure games, most notably those that were made with SCUMM (Monkey Island games, Maniac Mansion, etc.). While those more well known games cost money, there are also some adventure games that have gone freeware posted on the site. One of them is Beneath a Steel Sky which you've posted above, but you don't need to register to download from the ScummVM folks. You do, however, need to install ScummVM to play them. The others may be listed in some of the links you posted, but I thought I'd mention ScummVM because it makes them playable on large number of platforms, including phones. It also makes those old Adventure games very easy to run. There's no messing around with dosbox or fiddling with settings. Most games just work.

Games:
Beneath a Steel Sky
Flight of the Amazon Queen
Lure of the Temptress
Drascula: The Vampire Strikes Back

http://scummvm.org/downloads/

I might as well also mention that Angry Birds is free to play using Google's Chrome browser. Grab it from the marketplace. On other platforms it's a paid or ad supported app.

edit: Oh, man. I just realized you missed Octodad! It's a student project and they currently have a kickstarter going to fund Octodad 2. Giant Bomb user Hamst3r did... well I guess you'd call it an Endurance Run here. It's crazy.

@louiedog:  I didn't so much skip Scumm_VM as much as I skipped it because some of the games fall into that grey area mentioned in the comments.
the only I listed Steal Sky is because it's on GOG and it works with no tinkering. (or so I'm told. I played it years ago.)
I however did forget to mention octodad I'm going to link it above because that's a bit of a crime.

@JJWeatherman: Maybe ? If stroker64 isn't on lemon... hold that thought. http://www.lemon64.com/?game_id=215 apparently it's on there and you can play the web based emulation but, They don't host a disc image so someone that wrote it objected?  Jesus fuck legal shit when concerning games is just mind boggling. I was a C=64 kid so I grew up on shit like that strip poker and potty pigeon. Paying 300 bucks for a 300 baud modem just so I could get crap like stroker from the local BBS was the real rip off.

I don't believe that any of the games made available on the ScummVM site are in any gray area. Most of the games that are playable on ScummVM are difficult to find these days because they are out of print. They are VERY quick to strike down any talk of piracy on the site. You won't find a download link to the original Xbox port of ScummVM because it was made with tools that violate MS copyright. They don't want the trouble associated with that content anymore than GB does.

All four games have mentions about their freeware status and availability on ScummVM on their GB wiki pages, and they weren't added by me. The first three games have wikipedia pages that mention their freeware status. Lure of the Temptress is also available for free on GOGand on the developer's website

I realize this response seems a little like overkill, but I wanted to be thorough in case a mod didn't want to take chances and deleted my post if they were worried that it was a bit iffy.

And if people are getting Beneath a Steel Sky and Lure of the Temptress from GOG, they might as well add the other free games to their account as well. link
They are Dragonsphere, Teenagent, and Tyrian 2000.

Games for Windows has a free game with achievements. Tinker. It requires the GfWL client. link

This thread is in General Discussion, but all I see are PC games. How about some XBLA games?
Aegis Wing - link
Doritos Crash Course - link
Harms Way - link
Hexic HD - link  (If you have a hard drive for your 360 you probably already have this one)

Ground Control is free.

It's a very good RTS game, which places its focus on troop placement and terrain in favor of base building.

@louiedog: No worries, These are all great suggestions. It is also kind of funny in that I only added PC games as I am not big fan of PC games for the most part. I only
recently dove back into PC games and, I have the same gripes I did in 1997 through 2003-ish (when I gave up on them for a while) about them. Also, I've played with a controller so much It's odd going back to a mouse and keyboard. So I normally use a 360 pad or, A mad cats fighting pad to play games that allow it.

@Unknown_Pleasures:  If that's true and, You are not trolling me. Odin be praised for the people that are life guards. I never needed one but, I was a avid swimmer from about 3 years old to 15 or so. I spent about 3 to 4 hours a day, 3 to 5 days a week in a pool. I for one thank you for your service I'm sure it's boring and annoying as hell.

Just to be on the mark. I never swam professionally or anything I just really enjoyed swimming so I hit every open and free swim I could.
