Best Movie of the Year!

Just got back from watching Quantum of Solace and I can honestly say that it was the best movie of the year. Now this year I saw in theaters, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Hancock, Hellboy II, Wanted, and of course Dark Knight twice, and I still think that Quantum of Solace takes the cake. It had an amazing story for someone like me who was well versed in Casino Royale's plot, and had seen every special feature and commentary on the movie multiple times. If you haven't seen Casino Royale, you might be a bit lost, but it still does stand on it's own legs fairly well. The action was unsurpassed, with absolutely breathtaking set pieces, and right during the opeing scene I couldn't help but turn to my friend and say "Damn, this is gonna look sweet on Blu-ray" to which he replied with an understanding nod! If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend it.

It gets a Princely rating of 9.8/10

Hooray for James Bond!
This is definitely going to be the next movie I watch. Hopefully, I'll enjoy it as much as you did.

Sukiyaki Western Django = best movie of the year in my personal opinion.  Sure, my review doesn't necessarily paint it out that way...but I'm a huge Miike fan, so I just deal with the flaws.

I saw it. Was kind of let down by it, I thought it would have some great action and an understandable plot but it kind of fell bellow my expectations on both of those. I kinda wanna see it again in a better theater so I could understand it better but, still, I saw The Dark Knight in that theater and I still loved the crap outta that movie.

And guys, best movie of the year is Madagascar 2 IMBECILES!

I liked Quantum, saw it last night as well, but it's nowhere near contender for FotY. My pick goes to either Gomorrah or Hunger.

Dark Knight is much better than Quantum Of Solace. But they're different films.

The problem with Quantum Of Solace is that it has to come after Casino Royale which is the best Bond film I've ever seen. I thought the plot was far too complicated and some of the action scenes were too scatty.

That aside it's still an absolutely brilliant Bond film no doubt. It's just no Casino Royale.

Gemma Arterton as Strawberry Fields was AMAZING though. It's nice to see a girl like her rise from TV to start getting these huge parts.

WALL-E > All other movies ever made and all other movies that will ever be made.

I honestly did not like Quantum of Solace one bit. Casino Royale was mediocre, worth a watch, but nothing special. However QoS was just utter tripe.

I thoguht that was 2007? Or are you counting US release because us here in little ol' England don't even officially get it till 09, but still, I concur. Loved it. But yeah, Quantum of Solace was terrible and will be nowhere near my top 10 films this year.

I have no idea how to play poker, so I found that scene intensely dull. At least when he played Pontoon in the old films, the rules for that are simple, but with this, I was clueless even after someone explained it to me.

It was very good, but not as good as Casino Royale. And this is coming from a huge Bond fan. Dark Knight takes it for me, but I won't buy it -- I don't have an HDTV, and the movie isn't nearly as good if it isn't HD or on a giant screen. I'd assume, at least.

The relationship between Vesper and Bond was hands down the best thing about Royale. Something that wouldn't make sense if it was replicated in QoS.

Aside from that Royale had such a big effect because it was such a huge step for the Bond franchise. Quantum Of Solace was NEVER going to have that "innovation".

I think Quantum Of Solaces biggest hurdle was that it had to follow Casino Royale. Which it was never going to match.

But the whole point of the Vesper death and all the stuff that happens in Quantum of Solace is to show why Bond can never become attached to any girl and why he merely just has his fun and end it at that. It's a perfectly logical way to progress the story from Royale, and it works in all respects.

I'm glad you liked QoS. I've heard some negative things, which I hope are all empty.

Personally though, I don't think even James Bond can top Taken. That film is indisputably my favorite of 2008.

Oh yeah I know. And that's why Camille essentially  becomes a throw-away like all the other Bond girls of past.

You just miss the whole emotional side which while I agree makes logical sense, it means it can't top Royale. For me personally.

If that is the reason that you didn't like it, then it means that you won't like any other Bond film, because that's how he acts towards and girl that isn't Vesper. Still deserves to be watched as it is great fun!

That was from people who were trying to be different or are classic Bond elitist's. Honestly I read a review that gave it bad because this movie was missing four things:

1. Stupid gadgets, such as a jet pack, or a watch that shoots lasers were omitted.
2. Lack of stupid female names such as Pussy Galore.
3. Bond doesn't say " My name is Bond... James Bond."
4. Bond doesn't say "Shaken, not stirred."

Seriously, looking at those things, I'm happy they are not in Quantum of Solace, except for maybe "My name is Bond... James Bond." Even the "Shaken and not stirred" line is hinted at, when Mathis asks what Bond is drinking and Bond replies that he doesn't know, then asks the bar tender to which the bartender replies" blah, blah, blah... Shaken not stirred."  So unless you are a big fan of the campy old Bond, you will like this movie more likely then not.

So what you're saying is it's basically not a Bond film at all? You could have put any other actor in that film, given it another name and put it in a different franchise and no one would have noticed. The Bond films are meant to have gadgets and catchphrases and stuff in them. Casino Royale and QoS were both Bourne knock offs and that series was also terrible in the first place.

Nope, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying Bond has been modernized and de-campified... It still has a distinct Bond flavor, and Quantum of Solace is a direct continuation of Casino Royale so he has basically done everything that needs it to be a Bond film, but modernized. His gadgets are no longer uber-unrealistic, but they are still there. He has said his catch phrases already, and honestly, Pussy Galore was a stupid name, but even stupid names were poked at when Bond called Vesper Ms.Broadchest, or with the arrival of Ms.Fields.

Although this whole conversation failed when you called Bourne a terrible series... Do you like Barbie Horse Adventure?
