Best Movie of the Year!

Just got back from watching Quantum of Solace and I can honestly say that it was the best movie of the year. Now this year I saw in theaters, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Hancock, Hellboy II, Wanted, and of course Dark Knight twice, and I still think that Quantum of Solace takes the cake. It had an amazing story for someone like me who was well versed in Casino Royale's plot, and had seen every special feature and commentary on the movie multiple times. If you haven't seen Casino Royale, you might be a bit lost, but it still does stand on it's own legs fairly well. The action was unsurpassed, with absolutely breathtaking set pieces, and right during the opeing scene I couldn't help but turn to my friend and say "Damn, this is gonna look sweet on Blu-ray" to which he replied with an understanding nod! If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend it.

It gets a Princely rating of 9.8/10

The story barely moved forward at all, so I was disappointed by that aspect. It also wasn't as well-filmed, with too much jittery cutting. Other than those things it was entertaining, and Daniel Craig is awesome.

Just quickly to go back to my conversation with Liquid Prince - I love the Bond films (well... apart from Moonraker). I loved Quantum Of Solace. I'm just saying Casino Royale will always be on a tier HIGHER than everything else for me because it was just amazing to see that side of Bond for the first time.

To quickly pick up on the conversation of "this is not a Bond film" -- you're two years behind. Everyone had this discussion when Casino Royale came out: "oh noooo it's not a Bond filmz" - BUT it turned out to be a brilliant and MUCH NEEDED revamp to the series. Quantum Of Solace is just more of the same with perhaps more action.

And as for stupid names - Agent Fields was called Strawberry Fields, except it only tells you in the credits.

Get it? Strawberry Fields Forever? The Beatles?

Does anyone wish she was in it for longer? She was brilliant!

Yeah, there were ton of little references. Also, you can NEVER make a movie as good as Casino Royale in terms of story because that movie was all about the firsts that Bond experienced; first love, first betrayal etc... Quantum of Solace was a more thrilling ride however and is best taken as one movie divided into parts,

That was from people who were trying to be different or are classic Bond elitist's. Honestly I read a review that gave it bad because this movie was missing four things:

1. Stupid gadgets, such as a jet pack, or a watch that shoots lasers were omitted.
2. Lack of stupid female names such as Pussy Galore.
3. Bond doesn't say " My name is Bond... James Bond."
4. Bond doesn't say "Shaken, not stirred."

Seriously, looking at those things, I'm happy they are not in Quantum of Solace, except for maybe "My name is Bond... James Bond." Even the "Shaken and not stirred" line is hinted at, when Mathis asks what Bond is drinking and Bond replies that he doesn't know, then asks the bar tender to which the bartender replies" blah, blah, blah... Shaken not stirred."  So unless you are a big fan of the campy old Bond, you will like this movie more likely then not.

"
So what you're saying is it's basically not a Bond film at all? You could have put any other actor in that film, given it another name and put it in a different franchise and no one would have noticed. The Bond films are meant to have gadgets and catchphrases and stuff in them. Casino Royale and QoS were both Bourne knock offs and that series was also terrible in the first place."

Nope, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying Bond has been modernized and de-campified... It still has a distinct Bond flavor, and Quantum of Solace is a direct continuation of Casino Royale so he has basically done everything that needs it to be a Bond film, but modernized. His gadgets are no longer uber-unrealistic, but they are still there. He has said his catch phrases already, and honestly, Pussy Galore was a stupid name, but even stupid names were poked at when Bond called Vesper Ms.Broadchest, or with the arrival of Ms.Fields.

Although this whole conversation failed when you called Bourne a terrible series... Do you like Barbie Horse Adventure?

Being camp is a trademark of Bond. Going all superserious because the writing for the last films was terrible just seems gimmicky, particularly when you end up with films like Casino Royale and QoS where it could be anything whereas stuff like GoldenEye and Goldfinger at least felt like they had a distinct charm about them.

Yeah, my opinion is instantly invalid because I find a Matt Damon filmed in shaky cam doing occasional scenes of CQC while claiming he's forgot who he is quite boring. Seriously, if that franchise is 'intelligent action' then give me stupid any day.

No, being campy is a trademark of the Bond MOVIES. The original bond books were quite serious and gritty. Were just going back to the winning formula that was originally what made the books so popular.

That is indeed one of my favorites, tied for first, but Quantum of Solace is just on the edge of your seat action. Very enjoyable.

This isn't a book i'm watching, it's a film and every spy film since forever has been serious, so i'd much rather have Bond stand out as a more lighthearted affair than a uselessly serious tale.

Indeed, but this movie still had a Bondian flavor.

The best movies that I saw this year are as follows:

Dark Knight (who didn't see that coming?), Burn After Reading, WALL-E, Iron Man, Tropic Thunder, Role Models, and Wanted.

The best of those? It's really hard to decide, but it's a toss between Tropic Thunder, Role Models, and Iron Man.

I definatly enjoyed The Dark Knight. I can't say I'm in much of a position to name the "best film this year" because I haven't actually seen all that many films this year.

Not really. It just didn't have a lot of exposure. It's got motherfucking Liam Neeson kicking ass. By far the best action movie I've seen in years.
